Also need plumbing advice for my tank :X

First Paul where can I get a filtersock holder like this to put on the side of my tank ? http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp271/psh54/IMG_4426.jpg I will have 2 x 1.5" drains from the 700gph glassholes overflow and was trying to figure out how to run a sock with them.

Now to my question should I combine the 2 drains and then have it enter the sump as 1 or keep each drain separate. If I do combine them then do I have to go from say the 1.5" pipe to an adapter then to a 3" pipe? I always forget that part.

Also my return pump is an eheim 1262 off the return it states the outlet is 5/8" per aqua cave or 3/4" per marinedepot. My return outlets in the tank are 1/2" x 2, if I am running 1/2" by 2 then should I run the pipe 3/4" up until I get to the back of the tank then do an adapter to each return? Again confused on the size displacement.

Thanks for the help!

I would keep the drains separate for redundancy. I have 4 drains in my tank and three go into the sump.

Brandon, the filter sock holder is homemade. Easy to make. Take a piece of acrylic larger than the sock diameter and sized to fit where you want to put it. Cover it with masking tape and draw a circle slightly larger than the sock diameter…..I use 7 inch socks. Using a saber saw, cut out the circle. You could just use it like this, but I cut off part of the circle to ease installation and removal of the sock without having to lift it all the way over the top. Now I attached this holder right to the top lip of the tank using nylon machine screws….the holes are tapped….however, you could also drill slightly larger holes and use the machine screw with a nylon nut if you don’t have tap and dies. The edge of the holder that is not against the top lip is supported by the baffle with a piece of acrylic coming up from the baffle. I also placed a small piece of acrylic between the holder and the lip of the tank, leaving a little gap, to allow overflowing water to re-enter the sump (when the sock gets clogged).

One note on socks….the only reason I am using a sock is to keep snails out of the pickup for my skimmer. If I could assure no snails being sucked up into my pump, I won’t be using socks.

In regard to your question about number of drain lines….I prefer two separate lines. Run one to your skimmer section (with filter sock) and the other to your refugium (without a sock.) You don’t want a sock on the refugium side so some of that nice detritus can feed the guys in that section.

As far as pipe diameter for your return…..if you are trying to maximize return flow, put the largest pipe you can easily handle. Small diameter pipes have high frictional losses. So 1 to 1 ½ inch pipe would be nice. Bring that pipe up from the pump to the top portion of your tank where you put on a reducing tee sending one line in each direction to your bulkheads. Don’t forget to put in that siphon break set-up that was discussed earlier.

If you lived closer, I’d stop by to help you out.

Happy plumbing!

I'll cover gas lol.

So off pump run 1 1/2 then run to reducers to the .5 inch returns. Got it.

I like running socks because how much crap they catch and I tend to feed heavy so it'll be nics to remove the excess food

Actually I just ran the head loss on RC...they don't have the 1262, so I used the 1250. Very little difference in 1 1/2 and 1 inch pipe....about 2% with the numbers I used.

Quick Hijack, sorry.
I have been racking my brain trying to come up with a way to add a sock when needed. this seems perfect. Im hoping to go without, but we'll see.

The easiest sock holder (for the ones that have the rigid plastic tops), is to put a tee in the drain pipe and hang the plastic piece in the sock rim on that tee. These pictures came from George (TanksNStuff):

Yet another option is this contraption found HERE.

You know, George sent me that pic also. Forgot all about that. I actually have the "T" just gotta get a cap for it. As for the BRS holder and the CPR one as well I don't have the room for them in the sump. VERY TIGHT.
Thanks guys
John

So i was thinking, how important is the siphon break? I'm running a 75g sump half full on a 75g tank. I'm thinking I can skip the siphon break and be okay since the backflow if/when the power should go out would in theory not be enough to overflow the sump.

Don't forget to account for the water in the frag tank should you decide to go that route. But if your going to use your 75 sump on a 75 tank, you could get away with not having a siphon break (I would still put one or a check valve at least) it will take longer to fill the tank back up when you turn the power back on.

With the GPH of the pump you are going to use and the 1/2" returns, you will have two high pressure water cannons expossed at the surface of the water. If the nozzle is pointed up, you will shoot the water right out of the tank! LoL It would be best to keep them bad boys submurged. ;)

Did you post a pic somewhere that shows where the returns are in relation to the overflows?

The return is basically right to the left of the overflow about 2" away on either side. I will make sure I don't shoot the water out of the tank, that be embarrass!
