Alternative Energy

Since many of us use more electricity than the average home, I think It would be a great idea for us to get on board with this: http://push.pickensplan.com/. And not as a group but as individuals since this is most likely to become a very political issue and possibly something a non-profit should avoid (am I wrong on that?)

When you have a few minutes please take a look at the site.

Let me just start off by saying I am not trying to demonize T.Boone,I am sure some of his intentions are justified however, I think some true colors should be placed on this man.

Although he has had his PR firm window dress his plan to look like it is for the betterment of the country and the planet, if you dig deep enough, you will find that this is just another lobbyist trying to enrich himself. What burns me up is that he's doing it right in front of our faces instead of behind closed doors like lobbyists usually do.
It seems T.Boone owns one of the largest tracks of land where the wind farms could be placed. He has also been snuggling up to all of congress to have them pass a bill that would esentially give him huge tax subsides and sole rights to the construction of the majority of future wind farms.

Also if you dig a little bit deeper, you will also find out that he has appeared before congress and has stated that he is a BIGGGG proponent of drilling in America (oh by the way he made his fortune in oil drilling for those who did not know)Did I also mention that he owns huge amounts of untapped land that are possibly rich in oil

Now I am not saying wind farms are not a good thing. I just have a hard time with our politicians giving away my money (and yours) to one of the richest men in the country.

So, would you rather have a guy that has already made millions and is investing millions in alternative forms of energy (and, admittedly, alternative forms of business self preservation) step up, make waves, and get the ball rolling, or would you rather have congress vacationing in Hawaii on our dime doing nothing about it? I mean, seriously, I just heard an interview today that said oil companies are averaging some insane amount like $1500 per SECOND in profits.

I've seen several interviews with this guy, read up a bit, checked out some independent articles, and yes, he is lobbying and building business in his own pocket's interest. BUT, let's call a duck a duck, he makes no bones about the fact that it's his own company that will profit from the energy sources he is proposing, and the investment he is seeking, and he makes no bones about opening his own wallet to dump the seed money out there to the tune of billions of dollars. If you dig deep enough, he's also a supporter of natural gas powered cars, and a few other things as well. And how much in subsidies do we currently give oil companies for infrastructure, land deals, tax credits, etc? Why not toss it to wind power instead.

I don't necessarily like the idea of one guy getting exclusive rights to alternative energy (and honestly, I doubt that would happen), but frankly? I like sending $700 billion dollars a year to countries that call us infidels and want us destroyed a LOT less.

And I think all lobbyists should have to "lobby" for my money "right in front of my face". If he has other motives, or any part of this thing goes sour, hes right out there in the publics eyes and we will all know about it. Most of the time, we don't know anything about it until millions of lives are ruined, or billions of dollars are lost.

I'm following this pretty closely. And I know just the MENTION of things like opening up drilling, and the beginning of an infrastructure to provide alternative forms of energy have begun to affect the price of oil. Sure, there are other economics factors there as well (speculators being the biggest problem, I hate the so called "speculators"), but just the buzz is beginning to affect it!

Does the guy stand to make a small mint? Yes.
Is he seeking to capitalize on an angry population? Yes.

But, given the choice, I'd rather see my money stay here than go to good ole Chavez, or some other terrorist nation. And hell, if it cleans up the environment a little bit in the process, so be it.

Just my two cents...

I have no problem with T.Boone building his wind farms on his property, in fact I encourage it! What I have a problem with is having the same people (our politicians) who tell us they are to so much smarter than everybody else, and only they know whats good for us, pulling the purse strings. Lets just see if they run the alternative energy industry the same way they run FEMA, FDA, USDA, Medicare, Social Security, etc.etc.etc.
As far as altenative energy having something to do with the recent drop in the price of oil,I seriously doubt that has anything to do with it. The amount of alternative energy we produce is like comparing my fish tank to the amount of water thats in the ocean. But I guess we should be glad the price is coming down. Maybe that will help offset the price we pay for food now, thanks to our brilliant politicians paying  our farmers to produce corn for ethanol and not food.

Reminder to all:

Due to our Non-profit status, we are prohibited from discussing politics. We have mentioned the word(s) politics/politicians several times in this thread. So that this thread can continue on a productive path, stay open and viewable by all, please steer clear of political discussions.

Thanks.

Sorry Rich, wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the heads up.

Probably best if we stear clear of this all together. Too fine a line to walk.

From what I've been reading, he has made large political contributions but is not a politician. Maybe I'm just ignorant but I don't see a reason to bring up politics at all when we're talking about an individual spending hundreds of millions of his own dollars to get this country moving in the right direction.

Hey! I wanna be the party pooper.

Thread closed. Please take the discussion offline. While I'm sure it is all quite intriguing, the discussion isn't worth the jeopardy it places our status in.

Sorry gang!
