Anyone ship a car before?

you could use the amtrak auto train. You'd have to drive from Nj to Washington DC, then board the train with the car and go via train. you could book a sleeper car to sleep in, or just ride in a regular seat.

I didn't know the Auto Train went to Dallas.....thought it only went to Orlando, Florida.

I did ship a car from San Diego to New Jersey, but no recommendations. I will tell you that they did not allow you to load the car...had to be empty....and they didn't leave San Diego until they had a truck-full of cars....took about a week before they left for NJ.

I thought the same about the auto train.

I know they do have drivers around that will drive for you. As I remember hearing they are not to crazy expensive, but you handle all their fees. Either way it will certainly be cheaper then shipping it. That's if you don't mind someone driving your car though.

confirmed that amtrak auto train only goes to florida. i'm getting quotes from companies with higher reviews for $1100ish. companies with lower reviews for $800-900. The reviews mostly consisted of the lower rated companies not picking up on time or never sending a dispatcher. Is it simply you get what you pay for? the car is pretty much valued right at $4k on kbb so it's hard for me to justify paying 25% of the value just to ship it. But then again, it's essentially cheaper than me selling the car, and finding a car that i know doesn't require any additional work. I spent a good amount of money on my car over the past few years and it really doesn't need any more work. I have never driven the car for more than 4 hours so I am kind of nervous when it comes to driving it down to Texas - 22 hours at 1500 miles.

I say drive it.....make it an adventure.....and if you can find a friend to join you, have fun on the way...and fly that person back home. That's what my daughter did in driving out to San Diego....took a friend and took them about a month to see many sites in the US.

You're hours of driving 1500 miles is a bit off.....I'm thinking closer to 30 hours. Make it a three day drive.

Isn't there a website where overland truckers bundle cargo to site the are passing and going through, and bid for the work?

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Paul talked me into driving. I found a friend that's willing to make the trip with me. Best part about it is that he's an auto tech!

I was going to suggest that if you are shipping the car, make sure to budget for a complete detail upon arrival. We had two cars shipped from San Francisco to NY and they arrived not only filthy but so many dead bugs it was a real job to clean it well.
