There are plenty of poisonous stuff around that affects one and not the other. What's your point? People come here to get advice. What they do with it is up to them. I was told you can't put 3 dwarf angels in a tank together. Yet, I did and all get along fine. Yes, I did research the angels and there were mixed opinions. I took what I thought were the best for my situation and it worked. I'm done with this topic now.

calaxa you do come off rude in your posts. I know we are reading text but when we read it itcomes off that way. As for my hippo getting ich 3 times. It's my belief that ich never leaves my tank. When I add new fish it seems to cause an ich breakout. Could be the new fish but I think it's just in my tank and the fish get stressed out and show symptoms. When that happens I start feeding more times a day, using garlic and do waterchanges. Somehow this method has worked for me. But I'm not sure which part is working.

we all agree that garlic doesn't hurt. who knows if it really helps or to what extent it helps. It doesn't hurt you nor the fish nor the coral and that's good.
as long as ppl are sharing experiences, i am of the "opinion" that it helps their appetite. sometimes if their immune system is down, some food in your stomach helps if you can muster the strength. anyway, i use it in my freshwater frontosas whenever they kind of need a boost for their appetite. i use fresh cut up garlic laced and crushed with pellet food.

Ok you guys have convinced me. I will stop telling people copper and hypo (and possibly chloroquine) are only ways to cure ich. I am moving the velvet infested fish into a new system with no copper and will shove one big piece of garlic in there. They should be healed by tomorrow.

Now seriously, I never once criticized any of you on your use of garlic. I don't want to convince you that it's no cure either. I just want any new hobbyists reading these threads not to believe garlic is some miracle cure. Why do I want to do this? Cause I was that newbie reading about garlic not so long ago and followed the advice on this same forum. Look at the shelves in the LFS. Every food has it so a new hobbyist will think this thing has got to work. I got suckered into the garlic. You won't believe how many bottles/concoctions/foods I have of it. Oh yeah....I got cleaner shrimp too. Oh yeah....UV filter too. No diatom filter though. So don't go interpreting my posts to say stop using garlic cause it's not that at all.

And yes, that was intended to be rude.

Did someone say GAAALIC? I love garlic, my husband loves garlic, my kids love garlic, my dog loves garlic, my parrots love garlic (no joke) and I soak the fishfood in freshly cut up garlic, too. ;D

Scientific, non-scientific, bla-bla-tiffic....garlic IS a natural antibiotic (I learned that from one of my holistic health books).

I won't go into any debates, but I'll say it once more: We're a garlic reeking bunch here. ;D

Oh, one more thing: I'm a firm believer that garlic-soaked food will entice some hesitant/reluctant eaters to eat.

Now let me run off and cut up some garlic. 8)

Oh by the way i dont know if it cures ich but it taste good and its really healthy for alot of stuff. Im assuming it can only be good for fish too.

I dont like copper or any medicines that i wouldnt give to my self. Antibiotics stuff like that. Copper is know to have lasting effects on the animals and alot times causes damage to the animals. Fish live to be an infinite size, most saltwater fish can live on average 5- 10 years if well cared for. Id like to know if anyone of the people with old timers fish have ever treated with copper or anything.

Reefernets,

Sorry to be rude but you know now that I am but you quoted some questionable holistic health site which supports your claims then you dug up Steven Pro's article that I referenced earlier but did you read it?

Summary:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To recap, garlic's use as an appetite stimulant is questionable at best. It seemed to have a positive effect when injected into fish that were infected with a bacterium. It can kill the freshwater Ich parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis when dosed in rather high concentrations in the water. And, it might be an effective dewormer in freshwater fish. But, none of that means it will do anything against Marine Ich/Cryptocaryon irritans when added to the food of infected fish.

So, now that we know what has been studied regarding garlic, it should be readily apparent that there is still much that we don't know about garlic's use as a treatment, particularly against Marine Ich/Cryptocaryon irritans. I hope to shed some light on this in the coming months with a controlled study testing the effectiveness of garlic extract on fish exposed to Marine Ich/Cryptocaryon irritans. Hopefully, I will be able to determine whether garlic has any effect against this parasite, independent of natural acquired immunity. Until such time as that is proven, use a garlic treatment at your (and your fishes') own risk.

Wow....positive effect when injected into fish with a bacterium. Get those syringes out. Wow it kills ich but what about crypto?

And I've said many time I hate copper too but all you guys are playing monday night QB. All of you question my treatment of velvet but none of you stepped up to go to do anything about it. I agree with you on both copper and antibiotics. I do not like medication without substantiation. Oh yeah....I work for big pharma too which is ironic isn't it?

What kind of fish do u have that has velvet?

Also i used both sources as two different perspectives so people can read what both sides say.

Im not being rude or a MNQB which if i was i'd be the Real Deal Jay Culter. But im simply saying that garlic has some questionably proven good effects and you cant deny it. Im not saying what your doing is wrong just offering up a perspective so everyone is not in the dark.

Sorry reefer....didn't realize what you intended. If you wanted to present both sides...then that is appreciated. Only comment I have on it is the health site applies to humans so anyone reading....well take that into consideration. This topic was old last time but as soon as I hear crypto and garlic...it gets me off (and guys...please call it crypto....ich is for FW and is a different species)
