AO frag

Saw @MadReefer s post about Aquatic Obsession and realized I've never been there. A quick stop by Saturday and I end up with a sweet little frag of seduction palys. Pics in AB+ and nightime blues under Radions.

From what I saw they have a pretty good healthy selection of fish and coral. The guy at the store (whose name I forgot :( ) was super friendly and knowledge. Had to hang around a bit because there was an elderly man there with his wife setting up a rainbow guppy tank which sounded pretty awesome. Right when I asked for some coral info he ran me down the names and online going prices for pieces to assure me there was no ridiculous up pricing. His info matched what I knew and we'll, what more can you ask for. Happy and excited to go back there more often and support the business.

Will is the reason I have a salt water tank.
The first fish I ever purchased are still in my tank now came from aquatic obsession. I moved and I am not as close as I use to be but I still stop by anytime i am around Woodbridge.
If you haven’t been to his store it’s worth the drive. His fish and corals selection are always good.

I do like going to Aquatic Obsessions but I live about 40 minutes away. My only warning would be that his hours can be irregular at times. I've stopped by at least twice on weekend afternoons to find that he wasn't open (even when it was during posted store hours). On two other afternoons, I called several times and couldn't get through even after several hours, so I decided not to drive down there. All of these happened within the past couple years, so I would highly suggest that you call before going if you have to drive a distance.

Good morning Amado!
Do you know if they use full medication on their system like sea Level Aquarium? because that’s very convenient if they do.

Yeah they dose a light cooper to the fish only system. I had a conversation with will
About this a long time ago. I am not sure what they are doing now. Will has a very good eye for healthy fish. He dates all the tank so you know how long that fish has been at the store. All tanks are also clearly priced/ named so you don’t have to ask what is this and how much is this ?

Right now will is there by himself so he is doing everything on his own. He had a worker Debbie who is very good and has a ton of information but now because of covid she is not working with clients directly. Ethan I haven’t seen in a long time
But he usually does the tank install and maintenance part of the business.

you may want to subscribe to their email. Will emails out the date that he closes the store and also has live stock updates.

I would prefer they don't dose light copper to the fish. I QT my own fishes. For my experience, the fish usually show sign of ick in 2 weeks if no dose of light copper. And, it will take 3 to 4 weeks to show the sign with copper.

I said light because I don’t know exactly what he dose. His tanks are not cloudy like some other stores tanks that have heavy copper. I don’t want to say this out loud but my fish don’t have ick. I have very delicate fish that are considered ick magnets and I have nothing.
Aquatic obsession and reefco use similar
System and they sell very healthy fish.
I don’t buy fish often but when I do at this time I will only buy from those two stores.

Yep, I know they have new hours since COVID. But definitely there was a Saturday and a Sunday afternoon in the past 6 months where I either showed up and it was closed or I couldn't get through to anyone on the phone. I asked Will about it once and he said something came up. I respect that he may have limited staff during this time and stuff happens. I would just suggest that anyone who would take a drive down there (for me it's like 40 minutes) give a call just to check first so you don't get surprised/disappointed.

Some copper is better than no copper. And if you buy a fish that’s been there for a month it’s going to have a better chance to not have ick because of the circle of the ick. From what I know sea Level Aquarium has full doses

From what I read from article, small dose of copper (0.2-0.3ppm) will only masked the ick and make it not spread but not killing it. If you buy the fish and put it in your tank with no copper, the ick will be active again and spread.

Many LFS keep their fish at low dose copper which is enough to suppress ich and velvet. This keeps the fish appearing relatively healthy. However, these doses aren't therapeutic enough to kill the parasites completely, resulting in the reemergence of ich and/or velvet when they're removed from those low dose copper systems. Therefore, it's a false sense of security to assume that they've been treated - even the LFS selling you the fish won't make that claim.

Why do they not treat with full dose copper? Because copper is toxic for both fish and parasites. It just happens to be more toxic for the parasites so it kills them before it kills the fish. However, it suppresses appetite as well as the immune system of fish, which may make them more susceptible to other infections as well (including bacterial). Ultimately, copper for an extended period of time (and at higher doses) results in a shorter life span for the fish.

I know Sea Level doses copper but Warren uses ionic copper, so the levels are different than with chelated copper. I'm pretty sure Absolutely Fish has copper in their systems as well. I know Salgado Aquatics actually does dose therapeutic chelated copper at levels above 2.0. This is probably the reason that all of their fish eventually get discounted if they've been around for a few weeks - they gotta move them before something happens to the fish.
