The hose is to long to submerge without possible damage to coral, so why chance it.
I tried a turkey baster but it took forever to get the siphon going.

i still do it...occasionally i suck down a couple of drops....it hasn't killed me yet so i guess ill be ok

i used to have one of these....but the squeeze pump cracked and i used the rest for parts

I use a long hose and make sure to have it drop and then come back up. This way once I see watch going down I know I'm good to stop lung power. I have not drank much if any water with doing that.

They also sell a syphon that connects to the sink which can be used to start a syphon
 
I normally use a small transfer pump, goes quicker, i pump out then pump back in

Thst doesn't help clean my sand. Would have to pull it off the hose.
 
Yeah true, i use it for water changes not sand or rock cleaning, just water chages
