If you can run the pump just get some air in the line, either buy have the output break the water surface or creating a vortex, so it gets sucked in. Flow, air and heat I think are the most important, possibly in that order.

I was a late comer to this, LOL. As the days came closer to end game I decided maybe a generator was a good thing. Couldn't find one, so I looked for a power inverter. All I could find was a 150w one for $85 . I bought it just in case to run my heater. I have vortech battery backup to run my pumps/lights. Probably only have it run one pump & skip the lights. Screws my plans to move some of my fish over for a few days! I have a wedding this coming weekend too.. oh boy
