I'm currently running a 120 display....

Does anyone know what the best external (in-line) pump manufacturers are? Im looking to remove my pumps from the sump (I have mag 18 and a mag 7 running now)because it is generating too much heat. I know the mag's can run inline, but i heard they were not that good for it since they rely on water cooling rather than air-cooling. Any thoughts please....

Also if you know a good online shop where i can order the pump that would be great right now i use Marine depot, BRS and dr foster.

Thanks guys.... this is a great informative forum

The only external I have any experience with is Iwaki, and it was a great pump. But, I'm sure there are others.

Here's a reef pump head loss calculator that my be of some help, once you've made a decision.

An equally good external pump is Pan World. I believe the company was started by an Iwaki engineer, so the pumps are very similar.

MAG’s are good internal pumps as well. With 120 gallon DT, you should not have any problem with heat dissipation. You’re heaters might not run much, but you should be OK. I ran a MAG 24 and MAG 9.5 in a 90 gallon and had no problems.

Problem: Too much evaporation....

The problem i'm having is that my sump empties out about 4 gallons in two to three days.... That seems unusual to me... so i have to attribute to the heat being created by my pumps.. i calc'ed about 210w between the two pumps.... along with 12w in the display for circulation.... I've heard that the bigger the display the more water you lose.... but i wont be able to keep up with 4-5 gallons every 2-3 days....

FYI... I'm currently running the display topless.... if that helps narrow down the problem...

and would switch the mags to an in-line setup alleviate the problems..

Thanks again for all the help

You're still going to have to heat the water one way or another, so, unless you have to run a chiller, I don't know if replacing your submersible pumps will help the evaporation process. You could cover the tank to help with the evaporation, as long as that doesn't create other issues, i.e. gas exchange, diminished lighting, etc.

Changing pumps will not change your evaporation rate. The numbers you quote are normal. I loose about two gallons a day on a 90 gallon tank with a 40 breeder sump. I would suggest you look into setting up an Automatic Top Off (ATO) unit to automatically fill your tank. Now you set it and forget it!

Yeah, your evaporation numbers don't sound off to me. I'm not sure what my 90 is doing, since I've got an ATO. When I had my 44, it was evaporating about 1 gallon a day. Some form of Auto Top Off is probably best.

My ATO is very simple. I just have a float valve in my sump tee'd off my RO/DI filter line, so it just keeps the tank level very steady without an added pump.

reeflo also makes good external pumps. I bought mine used from austin (on this site) for a great deal. I use a reeflo tarpon (thing is huge and takes up a lot of real estate so if this is going under the stand, not the best idea). Mine does downstairs into the basement so I've got room to spare. I use this pump to power my beckett skimmer (mrc) and the return. If you have a different skimmer (with it's own pump) then you could probably just use a regular return pump rather than a pressure one.

I use a Reeflo Dart, very good experience... I had it driving a 1" return line to the DT plus running my old AquaC EV-180 skimmer, and it did better than the Mag 12 I had previously been using dedicated. And it had more left over... so it saved me 100w.

+1 on the Reeflo's.

I've had Mags, Panworlds, and Reeflo pumps. The panworld is still running on my FO tank, it's a good pump and very quiet. However, I love the Reeflo pumps. I think they're the best one's out there (my opinion). They're efficient and you can throttle them back if the flow is too much.
