Best salt mix

The "best" salt is actually the cheapest salt available at any given moment --- suggest you read through http://web.archive.org/web/20001215...om/fish2/aqfm/1999/mar/features/1/default.asp. I drive to The Hidden Reef (http://fishnews.thehiddenreef.com/) twice a year - they sell salt mixes as a loss leader, and you won't beat their prices. I buy either IO or Crystal Sea Marine Mix, which ever is cheapest (per gallon).

If you're doing acceptable rate water changes (like 25% per month), this is the only way to go...

I use red sea pro as well. drfosterandsmith.com sell it at the cheapest rate I have found and it qualifies for free shipping, fedex ground to your house in 4/5 days.

I second hidden reef. Cheapest I've found. That goes for any salt in the store. Their regular prices were cheaper then our group buy prices by about $5-$10.

i was at allaquatics in hamilton on thursday and they have the 160g buckets of reef crystals for $45 reg. instant ocean for $41

That normally where I go since they are right around the corner. Make sure you sign up for the rewards club. Every $100 you spend gets you a $10 coupon. Nice. Hidden reef is $5 cheaper on the bucket and I believe $5 more on the 200 gal box. Their reward club is worthless though, $1000 to get $10

I second Crystal Sea Marinemix. The salt is very cheap compared to every other salt on the market, and has dechlorinator added in every batch. The pH, alkalinity and calcium content is a little low, but that's why we dose, right? In addition, I see far more "critters" (copepods, amphipods, sea stars) in my tank when using this salt. However, unlike others, I scored a 200gal mix in a box for $32 at something fishy, aka toofishy.com.

I thought this thread was about the best salt mix not the cheapest? Do you really save money when you have to dump additives into your tank?
I,ve always heard esv is one of the best never used it for the same reason most dont its looks like a pia to mix.
anyone useing esv want to chime in?

This thread reminded me I need salt! Drs foster Smith has 200g reef crystals boxes for $49 shipped. I've used RC my whole time in the hobby.

Jason, the salt group buy is this month (March) and hopefully we will be doing better than what you've posted (We have in years past.) Hate to deflate your bubble! :p And it better be soon because I'm running on fumes for salt. Definitely ordering an extra box to get through next year.

Just got Reef Crystals 200g Box from the Hidden Reef yesterday for $39.99

Nice price Dan. Was it on sale? Usually it's the 160g bucket for that price.

Im also surprised you got it there. Believe it or not I have been unable to find RC locally for quite some time. The last bucket I bought, I had to go to aquarium center for. I ended up switching to redsea coral pro because of it. So far so good though.
