Thanks so much, Ed! Poor guy showed up here to pick up out some rock and instead he went on the Grand Dog Chase all around Jackson. Thanks so much for your help chasing down the dog, Ed. It was a big relief knowing we had eyes all around trying to help find our free running spirit.

We owe ya!

Where's the Vodka?!

Ditto Ed! Thanks so much for the help. I'm sorry you drove all the way out here for nothing. We'll make it up to you!

No sweat, glad I could help and very happy they found her for you all. What is the dog's name again? I'll have to name the 1st fish after her ;D

Her name is Zenni. Not sure it makes such a great fish name! We certainly appreciated the help!

Invest in an electric fence. They work great.

Unless your dog gets scared of it and then doesn't want to leave the back steps! We have one, in fact if you want I could sell it....uhh...ummm...reef trades....uhh....sorry. :p

400 or 800 yard shock collar. under $200 or get the grand daddy 1K yard model. Guaranteed not to run away and if so still get the shock of a lifetime!

Yup. That's what we're thinking. The shock collar so that she has to come back to us. Are you talking about the Dogtra?

Glad the dog got back safe. As for the shock collars... Have you ever been zapped by one? It is now the reason why I am not the 1st to pass out at parties. ;D

Here how i look at it, If your not willing to put that collar around your neck and walk outside the boundry, then i dont think my dog should either.

I like the idea of fencing in a yard, it may be more expensive but it also gives the dog an area to run around without fear.

The shock isn't too bad, but after a while the beeping alert is usually enough to stop the dog. It is usually a good idea to setup marker flags and train the dog the boundaries over the course of a few weeks. Some people just install them and let the dog loose and it isn't fair to the dog.

The collar I'm looking at has a vibration only mode that will merely help her focus/listen when she's called (hey what's that buzzing in my ear). It isn't actually a shock collar (unless you need to escellate because they're in danger). It is human controlled, not a fence system. This way when I'm chasing her around the woods at 9:00 at night I can get her attention.

I have a fenced in yard. She ran out the front of the garage on the way home from a play date. It was an accident that could have cost her life. It would have been a terrible lesson for a 9yo to learn.

Beyond that yes I have been shocked by them. There are some dogs that are so focused on the run/escape that they don't hear you and others where a physical fence isn't enough to convince them to stay home! I think the thing we need to remember here is that there are situations where you need to go beyond normal "parenting" methods and we all need to be tolerant of the decisions that others (have to) make.

And you're right ... once they get used to the boundaries a properly trained dog will stay out of the shock zone.

One of my neighbors uses that boundry system with the vibration ones and it works well. I have seen his dogs go just inches from the boundry but never over it. Thy seem to know EXACTLY how close they can get.

wouldn't it be easier to chase her around the woods in the daylight? ;D
( sorry, thought that would be funny )
with my 2 Bichons, max will not run away, Caesar will think your playing with him, so with Caesar what i do is run the other way and Caesar thinks I'm playing and starts to run after me. Then, when he's closer to me i just tell him it's time for a cookie---that basically stops him in his tracks and he follows me into the house for the cookie.
but of course, they are like little kids and you have to be ever diligent to make sure nothing happens--we are constantly making sure, and telling our sons, when we open a door ( garage or front ) that boths dogs ( kids ) , are within our sight.
would be interested to hear, phyl, how that collar works out.

Yeah treat bag in hand, shaking it like a mad woman and the dog 4 feet from me she ran the other way. I even tried running in the other direction. That was when I lost sight of her and couldn't pick her back up again. It was getting dark and she was mud brown. Bad combination!

wow--i know the feeling , your heart is racing, your worried as all hell that you might not find her, she might get hurt, someone else might take her---damn---and then have to go back home without her and tell the kids the dog is missing!!!
but, as it turns out, all is well ( thankfully ) your liquor bottles are emptier, and she probably slept like a baby thru the night!!!
