blue crab...

does anybody have experience with keeping a small blue crab in a tank. i have one right now and he isn't aggressive and eats all the left over food but there are a lot of people on other sites say its impossible. whats your opinion?

its possible.... thing is he will eat fish or inverts, your temp will shorten his life span and he will tear your tank up...btw there is a minimum size limit on blue claws that your allowed to keep....

Are you talking about a Blue Claw crab out of the ocean?

Once it gets bigger I'm sure it will try and eat everything that it can grab, just for the fun of it! Those things get MEAN when they get big. I'm sure it's pretty cool to watch him run around though...but I would be weary of keeping one for sure.

I doubt it will live long in the tropical temps. Animals like that need the change in water temp to survive. You may get a few months but probably not much longer.

I've kept one in my sump for about 6 months. I feed him silversides. One day I was working on another sump about 10 feet from that sump. I felt something walk acroos my foot. Yep, the crab climbed out of the sump and was walking my floors. He grew from an inch to 6 inches in 6 months.

I usually always agree with you but on this one I'm going to hedge and say that these crabs are so invasive they are more than able to adapt to the higher temps.

Don't forget they are found all over the atlantic from NY/NJ all the way down to Florida, Louisiana and Texas. With the biggest specimens (i've personally seen) from Lousiana/Tx. Although maybe that's because they only ship the super jumbo sizes up here.

That stated, Blue crabs are NOT reef safe and as Mikem mentioned - escape artists. I was thinking about keeping one in it's own tank. Would be neat to see pics of yours.

My friend moved to texas and sent me a pic of a blue crab, it was the whole bottom of the spackle bucket.... Huge!

how do i get the size of the pictures down so i can post them cuz i got a bunch of good pics of him but they are to big
