Bowfront Stand Mod

I have a question for all members, let me explain: I currently have a 46ga bow (FOWLR), and a 72ga bow (full reef). The problem is that the stand on the 72ga is in real bad shape (particle board material damaged by water), its a standard 55ga stand that I nailed a 1/2" board on top to use with the bowfront tank, I knew it was just a temporary fix never meant to be permanent. I just aquired a used 46ga bow stand and I was thinking of using it with the 72ga tank. Do you think if I cut and fashioned a top following the contours of the 72ga tank and attached it to the 46ga stand it could/would work as a permanant stand. I am trying to avoid having to redo this whole setup again.

Thanks

Hmm, that's a pretty big differance in gallon size, what are the dimensions of the 46 stand and the 76 tank, how much overhang would there be. I'd worry about stability as well. Having just built a stand for my 28 bow I'd probably just make a new stand, they're not that expensive to build and would give me piece of mind.

The width on the 46ga stand is 36", the width on the 72ga is 48". By placing a 1/2" flat board on top I think it would remove the stress on the 6" overhang on each side.

I wouldn't do it. That big a tank is to much of an investment once filled to risk. Spend the $60-$80, make a stand that will fit it and hold it for sure. That stand fails and you've got a big mess on your hands.

Place a stiff piece of cardboard on the top of the tank and then take a pencil and run it around the tank on the underside of the cardboard and you have a template.

One more question, the tank is wood colored trim and I was thinking of using this opportunity to paint the background black and at the same time paint the trim black. Has anyone done the trim before and have you encountered any problems with it flaking off or peeling? ??? Thanks.
