i tried to search the forum but for some reason i cant see the letters to show that im a real person , so anyways , i think im gettin slime algae in my tank. i swear it wasnt there one day and the next thing i know its a couple patches of it on my crushed coral. anyone have a good way to get rid of this stuff.

maybe you have cyano bacteria? Google that and check. It's usually a reflection of the tank (spots where it grows at least) having lower flow. Also are you feeding heavily?

Just a suggestion, you might conceder replacing the crushed corral with reef sand or even going bare bottomed. The crushed corral has a rep of holding detris and causing problems resulting in algae and cyno outbreaks.

it is cyno. i bought some red slim remover but havent used it yet. went to the fish store and read up on it. basically they said and the net said no point jus using the remover bcuz i still wouldnt have taken care of the cause of it. i have a koralina 3 . a nano and the stock pump. i think it might be me. havent been doing a great job vacuuming. so im goin to get another vacuum with a bigger hose on it so itll suck up more waste. becuz the one i use now the hose is kinda small and doesnt pick up waste on the bottom.also going to cut back on my light from 12 hours to 8-10...i guesss if that doesnt work ill get a skimmer

cyano indeed.

Everyone gets it in some shape or form. Mine comes in the refugium. Not having a skimmer could definitely be a reason why - but the other way to get the nutrients out is to do more regular water changes. It's a pain I know (i don't have a skimmer). The only other solution is to cut back the lighting/feeding and or the number of inhabitants in the tank.

Watch your water quality going in. I found that in my AP temp swings created a lot of problems with cyano.....also run some phos and silicate remover in one of your back chambers it will help. That along with good water changes will clear it up. In a way it is not bad because it tells you you have a problem without killing anything(with a few exceptions gorgonians for example). Also a turkey baster can be used to blast it up into the water column before water changes and you can remove some of it. That will help it clear up faster.

its been a lil bit since ive posted anything. changed some things around . the red slime is gone .... only to lead to (i dont know if you call it a problem) the brown version... but regardless here are some pics

any suggestion on controllin the brown slime algea bsides skimmer and water changes...cuz they dont seem to b working. i talked to a lfs guy and he says he has it in his tanks at home. and wasnt to much i could do but keep it to a minimum. so is there no way to get rid of it completely/.?

your tank looks really nice.. i dont know much about taking care of algae but i do know that it is all part of the process.. my boyfriends the saltwater tank know-it-all and unfortunately he's at work.. when i was having some algae issues i know that he had me dose my 12 gallon with algaefix made by API.. it seems to be doing its job.. he also told me to put in hermit crabs because they eat the algae.. im not sure about all kinds but most of them i think..
