Buying Trex

I need to buy a bunch of Trex to resurface my deck. Is there any place that's cheaper to get it, or any way to get it cheaper?

Trex is but one manufacturer of composite decking…and the largest. It is available at Home Depot and I think I saw that they are having a 10% sale on it right now.

I don’t have pricing, but the other two major suppliers/manufacturers that I know of are GeoDeck and EON. Check them out. Also might want to look into Premium Composites…I’m pretty sure it’s an import product but rated fairly high.

None of these will be cheap…composite stuff comes at a premium. I’ve had a lot of luck with “premium” quality pressure treated boards for decking. You can find these at Lowe’s where you have the choice of “regular” planking (which is crap) and the “premium” planking.

Now if you want to put down a premo deck, go with ipe (also known as ironwood)…nice stuff, but expensive.

Oh yeah, that ironwood would be sweet. Why not go all the way and makie it out of teak, like a sailboat deck? Just a little tung oil every year and you're set!  :)

My main goal is to have a surface that requires NOTHING (but cleaning) from me on a yearly basis.

Do you think HD would be cheaper than 84 Lumber?

I rebuilt my deck with composite about 5 years ago. It's holding up great. I used a product called Evergrain. The Trex didn't have a pattern to it just flat the Evergrain is textured like wood. A quick power wash in the spring and your good to go.

Jim, just received a Lowe’s ad and their “Choicedek” composite decking has new reduced prices. Grey (5/4” x 6” x 16’) is $1.81/ln foot….$28.97/board. And longer grey or other colors (5/4” x 6” x 12’) are $1.83 /ln foot…$21.97/board.

hey jim! just as a word of advice......If your joists are 16" on center, I would look into getting a decking material as thick as possible I know for a fact that the stuff at Depot and Lowes will flex when it gets hot. Alot of townships now require 12" spacing on any new deck that will use composite decking. When I built my house we used Epoch decking 1" thick 16" on center for the joists. Because all my decks are under cover they do not get hot but I can still feel a little bit of flex. If I was to do it again I would buy the thicker stuff, I think its called five 1/4.
The other thiing you could do is sister up your existing joists with new 2x material to reduce the span between the joists. That would probably be cheaper than going with the thicker material.
Remember...you get what you pay for when you go to HD or Lowes. I'll bet my back side, anything from those two places will fade in a years time.
Also look into the under side mounting systems so you don't see the screw heads. Compsite decking is notorious for puckering when you drive screws in from the top (i used "EB-TYES")I would go to a high end lumber yard before i ever considered a box store for my decking material but thats just my 2 cents. good luck!

LOL, I was just checking out the lousy job somebody did on my sister's Trex deck. Every single screw is mushroomed in! Oy vey, maybe I'll just spray it with pickup bed liner!

I agree with paintman about utilizing the hidden fastening system. It gives you a very nice clean look. I also liked his “5 ¼” reference….lol. It is actually said as five quarter and written 5/4. What this means is the thickness of the “wood” before finish surfacing…that is, originally 1 ¼ inches thick. After finish surfacing, the actual thickness is 1 inch (they remove ¼ inch). So, to repeat, 5/4 lumber is actually 1 inch thick.

I also agree with Jcurry about aRZee…by the way they have multiple sites in NJ. The one closest to me is on Edgeboro Road in East Brunswick. I’ve used them for siding and roofing materials. What’s great is that it’s delivered right to the job site. They also have pretty good prices. The one caveat is that you need to know how much you need to order. It’s not like the HD and Lowe’s where you can go in there and buy a board or two. You can also buy the brackets, screws and whatever from them as well. I like them.

That's good info guys, I think it might be worth skipping HD and going to a specialist...

But the one thing ArZee DOESN'T SELL is Trex! ;)

Thanks for the offer. I'm afraid they'd kill me on delivery up to Morris County!
