I also test before the dosing and the next day. Sometimes I may test a few hours later, to see if it's at the right number. I think you said you use the API test, which isn't supposed to be the most accurate. But, a while ago I bought the API and thought it was wrong, cause it was reading like 580. So, I returned it for the Salifert kit and tested and it was at 580 on the Salifert kit too. Guess it was right. I've also heard that over time they may loose their accuracy. Maybe try a different kit.

I have a 90 gallon, with an assumed 100 gallons total. I add about 5 teaspoons weekly, with some Kalk dosing. Was just surprised your tank was good on just 4 drops.

I think my problem goes back to my first coral i purchased. It small birdsnest frag that was severally damaged and dieing. I tried saving it and am still trying to but with very little success i think it was at a point of no return. My guess is due to it size and the actually amount of living it was doing i compared consumption to it. So when i added this coral and started to get all kinds of high readings the amount of calcium i was dosing was doing basically nothing. i feared the testing kit was inaccurate or the calcium went bad. I think after a few days of mild confusion i am on the right track again.

You can check some new mixed saltwater to get an idea of your test kits accuracy. Most brands have the parameters listed to compare to.

As a side-note is it OK to place a coral sideways like this or does it have to be perfectly upright.

Most corals are OK like that but keep in mind that however you have it, it will bend and grow up towards the light. That will make it much harder to relocate in the future if need be.
