After I retired I promised I would never go into that city again, but it seems something always comes up and I have to go back. My daughter is marrying a guy who has a condo in Chelsea in lower Manhattan so I am stuck going there for the rest of my life.
40 years working there was enough.

OK I went to B&H camera in Manhattan and bought a Canon SX 20. (By the way. that place is bigger than Home Depot) The thing seems to do everything and is even now cooking dinner for me.
They gave me $75.00 for my Nikon film camera and a zoon lens. They did not want my 75 to 300 mm zoom so I may just dump it.
The canon has a 500+ zoom and a macro where I can take pictures closer than an inch.
Thats exactly what I wanted. Now I have to read through the 100 pages to figure out how to do the things I hope Ican do like take a decent picture of the tank.
They just never seem to come out nice looking. Maybe my tank is just not nice looking enough. I think thats it. ;D

Congrats on a new camera. Can't wait to see your photos.

We also got a camera from B&H. Ordered online, didn't have time to go there. Decided to go with Nikon D90. It was shipped yesterday, should arrive tomorrow. I know what I will be doing this weekend. ;D

Glad to hear it will have a good home! Let me know...

Glad to hear you're not taking apart the tank. Once you have some shots post them up and I'll help you fine tune your skills with the tank!

Phyl, this is with my old camera but I can't seem to get the pictures sharp, even with a tripod. And what setting do you use? There are a lot of settings, shutter speeds, focusing ways, and lighting.
Thanks

Paul, that photo was taken at an angle to the glass. Because of the distortion introduced by the glass itself the camera lens must be as close to absolute parallel to the glass as you can practically get it.

That picture actually looks pretty good to me, considering the fact that you're on so great an angle with the camera. Straighten it out and post what you come up with next. We'll worry about focal points, settings and lighting next!

Phyl, this is almost straight and is again the old camera. I am not supposed to use the Canon until my birthday Christmas day but I have used it and the pictures are no better than this. The camera actually has an aquarium setting.
I will take a few pictures with the new camera on the aquarium setting and see what you think.
This one I am still not crazy about because it still looks a little out of focus.

If you are concerned about the blurry fish, that is because of motion. I can't really tell at this size, but it looks to be in focus.

Mbodell, I am not concerned with the fish. The rocks do not look sharp to me (maybe I need glasses)

Anyway here is the new camera on the aquarium setting, obviousely a lousy picture and I know I am doing something wrong. The camera was on a tripod. I need to know what all the other settings need to be. I also took a picture on the auto setting and that was all washed out.

This was with my old camera and I think it looks good, I also don't remember what I did to take it but my new camera should take comparable or better shots

I see what you mean, i think the new pic looks blurry too. Fish and rock work. Nothing looks defined. The old camera pics do look clearer and sharper. Same prob i have with mine it always looks blurry

I would go to the p mode on the camera first. Then go into the menu and try the different metering modes to see which one works best. Ideally the spot metering with a grey card or aim at a light grayish rock should give decent exposure. Or if you want to keep the matrix metering on, you will have to adjust the exposure toward the minus.

Is this the camera with the image stabilization? I would turn that off if you are on a tripod. Sometimes it makes things worse.

one other thing to do is to go into the m mode and set the camera with at f8 and 1/125 and see what happens. Then adjust the speed (move the 1/125 number lower or higher until you get the exposure right. (you need to use f5.6 if you go down to 1/30 speed) Once you figure out what your available lighting is, you shouldn't need to change the settings more than one stop either way from then on.

Mbodell I will try that. I just had a front tooth implant (my 8th implant) So I don't feel like taking pictures now. But I will maybe tomorrow.
At least I got cool pain pills.

Take some pics while you are on the pain pills, I could use a good laugh. ;D

On a side note, I would turn on the timer mode as well.
