Can i get corals in a biocube with stock lighting

i am planning on upgrading my pumps to the maxijet 900 along with the korilia 1. i do not plan on upgrading the lighting just yet because i dont have good electrical skills and i dont have or want to spend 500 dollars on the nano customs lighting.

does anyone know if there are any corals i can keep in the tank. it is a 14 gallon oceanic biocube.

other upgrades,
1. removed stock filter media, replaced with the stevieT media tray filled with charcoal, chemipure elite and filter floss

can i get any nice corals

i am not talking today. tomorrow, or even next month, just in general

any thoughts are appreciated

You can keep many types of softies and lps corals.

my last tank didnt have any real corals, 1 actually, but i got rid of the tank before i got anymore...so i dont know anything about corals...sorry

how can i tell what is a softie or lps??

mushrooms, ricordia, zoa's / paly's, leathers, xenia, green star polyps, all basically softies. lps = frogspawn, hammers, torches, fungia's, chalices, acans, bunch of others, though some may require more light to really thrive, not sure what the cube comes with. Try going to www.liveaquaria.com they'll have stuff divided into categories, softies, zoa's/palys, lps, sps, clams, fish, inverts, etc and than list some basic requirements, same w/ most coral websites.

I would just stay away from the clams, sps, & anenomes in the inverts section to start & you should be ok.

Buffalowing gave a great reply, you will need to put different corals at different heights depending on their lighting needs. Try to grab a book or two to get a good idea what you can do to keep everything healthy. There are couple other sites just for nano tanks too. nano-reef.com is one.

The Biocube 14 comes with 2 - 28w PC so you are restricted with what you keep, but, there are quite a few you can keep. We have one setup here in the store and we keep leathers, acans, dendrophyllia, zoanthids, as well as other corals that don't require strong light.

As James pointed out, you definitely want to do research before buying corals for your tank. You need to know the difference between the corals if you are going to keep them and the requirements for keeping them alive. Otherwise, you are heading for disaster. Try hooking up with one of the old-timers here, go to a LFS and let them point out the different corals and their needs. It's a HUGE NO-NO to buy corals that you don't know how to take care of.

I like this book as a basic book.
The Nano-Reef Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Reef Systems Under 15 Gallons
by Christopher Brightwell
There are a couple very good starter books. I am sure OGII has some and they can show you all the choices. You are pretty close to OGII see sig on Reefers post.
For a nano I like zoas, some leathers (saw nice green one on the OGII website way bright green), maybe a head or two of LPS smaller ones like duncans are good for you...plus they feed like crazy or at least the one that I got at OGII does. There are a lot of other ones but they can get big or take up a lot of room.

While I do not have the book myself, I have been told this is a good book to get some of the basic requirements for the different corals.

Corals: A Quick Reference Guide by Julian Sprung

You can then expand your knowledge on the ones you like, and meet your requirements.
