Canister filters

Woundering how many people use canister filters as there main filtration and how they are making out with them. the reason I ask is because im going to set up a holding tank for some SPS and LPS until I can get the tank i really want and it seems all i can find is something none RR and i dont want to drill how is your water turnover and what brand are you using
thanks for looking

hahah haven't used one of these since early 90s when bleached coral and Underwater Gravel Filters were the rage.

I think you can use them effectively as a reactor for reef tanks - but they tend to trap detritus and generate nitrate. Eheims are great but pricey. Good luck!

Yea I know I heard horror stories about them was hoping someone had some luck but I think I will hold out until I find something drilled

Dan I dont know if you remember my corner pentagon tank but that was run with a HOB AquaClear 110. I used the filter sponge and a bag of carbon in it. As far as Im concerned it did a great job and I think anyone who saw that tank would agree.

Plus I used that kick *** prizm skimmer. Which, as it happens also performed well. I still have it and your welcome to it.

I do remember that tank and it looked great if I can't find a drilled tank by Saturday I will just get something none RR and get the same filter thanks for you input John

Hey Dan k, I run my sons 20 on a e hiem and a hob filter it's been up for 2 + years it looks great. I also run GFO for phosphates. I have no sps but do have lps lots of water changes and routine maint in the e hiem to remove detritus. It's a pain but will work for a smaller tank. If you can use a sump you'll be glad you did

Hey jgraz, if Dan k isn't interested in that skimmer I would love to give it a shot on my kids tank. Maybe I can swap something for it or buy it from u if not to much cash let me know.

I can pass on the skimmer I have one that I can plumb into my tank with or without a sump thanks for the offer anyway John

I have an old Eheim 2226, that was used on a FO tank, that has been cleaned, and media filters preplaced if you want to use it.

Dan

Ive been scouring craigslist for a 40b to use as a frag tank and have come across a couple of 75s. I saw one in Williamstown for about 50 and a reef ready on in ne philly fir around 100.
