Can't find dow flake

You can use Prestone Driveway heat for the calcium part. Ive seen it in Lowes, Walmart, and ShopRite to name a few

First off did you see the shipping costs…….33.56 for a ten dollar bag. Ouch!

I’d be skeptical for two reasons:

1.) The label says 77-80% pure. Now that might be the actual calcium chloride content because it’s a hydrated form or it might be “crap”…..you don’t know. If I were to guess, I’d guess it’s the hydrated form just like Dow Flake…..but that’s a guess.
2.) You will need to find out what form of calcium chloride it is….hydrated or anhydrous.

Why don’t you just use one of the substitutes mentioned in Randy Holmes-Farley Write-up. I have been using Preston Driveway Heat….easily found during the winter months at many stores…..and from the article I know it’s anhydrous (dehydrated, so I know how much to use.

I used Prestone Driveway Heat years ago and it did raise and maintain the calcium level. I started having issues with my SPS & LPS about a year later, so I stopped using the heat. My issues lasted for a few years until I started using Lugol's. So, not sure if it was the Driveway Heat or not, but the heat is only going on the driveway from now on.

BRS has the calcium chloride at a decent price. That's what I use now. For me, it's not worth taking a chance. It may be fine or it may cause issues down the road. Don't know. I do know the BRS is completely safe and have been using it for the last two years.
