I change carbon out monthly in my 12 gallon, and chemi pure about every other month. The chemi pure really helps pulling nitrates out of the water and reduces the algae.

so what kind of carbon is everyone using? Is one better than another?

As a chemist, I can tell you that there are hundreds, if not thousands of different carbons available...differing in size, porosity and origin of materials.

As far as what we’re using...the one from the group buy.

I think another carbon / phosban group buy is coming up next month.

I just switched to ROX 0.8 carbon from Bulk Reef Supply. So far I like what I see. I took a PO4 reading a day after starting it and for the first time ever I got a 0.00 reading and a 0.02 reading on a Hanna meter. ;D One might say, it's not due to the carbon because carbon doesn't remove PO4. True, but if the carbon is not leaching out any PO4 at all, then that definitely helps.
