Changing lighting in my 75 Gallon AGA

I currently have 2 175 (10K) metal halides over my tank over my 75 gallon tank. I was thinking of changing my lighting to 1 Actinic VHO and 3 40 watt 6500K normal output florescent lights (from Home depot). NO lights will be overdriven by an Icecap 660. Do people still overdrive normal output lights with success? Is anyone in the club doing this?

Hey Larry! Good to see you here ;D

I have never heard of anyone overdriving NO lights with a 660 before (must have been before my time!). Is this more economical than T5s? I wonder if the T5 wave has eliminated the use of overdriven NO lights. I'm not sure I could stand to look at 6500k, personally. I neeeeeed some blue!

Interesting... What corals are you keeping these days? Do you think there will be any algae implications from using the 6500 NO bulbs? Do they hold their color spectrum? I'd love to see progress shots on the tank for a few months to see if there's any notable change.

Hey Larry! Thanks for checking in. Sorry I can't help with your lighting questions. I know less than zero about lights. But, the holiday party is coming up. Here is a link to the details. Hopefully we'll be able to see you there. I didn't get nearly enough time to catch up at MACNA.

for some reason when i switched my 75 gal to 6500k within a week i had a hair algae outbreak now i dont know if it was from the lighting change but that was the only thing i changed in over 2 years my tank was healthy levels were fine and all so i finally changed the lights and the growth stopped but it did come back every now n then

Every time you change your lighting you cause a change in your tank. Nutrients that one algae might not be able to use may feed another algae that thrives in those conditions. Altogether possible that the change caused the outbreak. I see it often when people change types of lighting (PC/T5/MH) as well.
