Closed loop system?

Anyone has one? How does it work? What are the benefits of this system?

Toying with the idea of another FOWLR ;D tank and thinking if closed loop is a good idea.

Tank flow like that is of greatest benefit to corals, may as well go full blown reef!

Idea is to get non-reef fish. Things that I cannot house in a reef tank. So no benefits for a FOWLR tank?

Not really worth the cost unless you are running some sort of manifold with carbon, UV, or something. But most add ons like that need a lower flow. Otherwise power heads create flow with less energy.

What is the cost? I have a friend who has a 180 gallon drilled for closed loop that he inherited. The tank is 2 years old. Also has 2 overflows.
Needless to say he has no idea what to do with it. So I was thinking to get it.

If I get that tank, what else is involved?

Plug up the closed loop holes and run the fowlr with a simple sump. Then pick up the moray eel from Uncle Maco. Great addition to a fowlr.

I was referring to the cost of running a pump like a Mag 12 vs the cost of running a couple Koralia powerheads or something similar.  That said there are things you can do like run carbon, UV ect that will help in filtration.  Figure some folks still run canister filters on FOWLER tanks.

+1 on that eel

Id just throw a large pump on a fowlr so you have a lot of strong flow stirrin it up. Id make the rock like pillars and cover as little of the bottom as i could with it. This way there wont be many dead spots. If there are maybe 1 or 2 cheap powerheads will get to them. I say strong flow cause chances are if you want this for non reef fish, they'll prob be pretty big too. The stronger flow will help get their crap to the overflow. My uncle has a 300 fowlr with about 3,000 gph going to a spray bar. The top of his tank ripples like anything and nothing settles in there it all goes to the overflow. He has a lot of large fish in there too. I think closed loops are another electric bill for the pump and more chances of leaks. Just seem like a pita
