Clown Goby with Swollen Body

Status
Not open for further replies.
I have an Orange Clown Goby that was completely fine last night. Now today it's body from behind its gills to the beginning of the tapered section of his tail is swollen. That part of his body is discolored to the point that it looks like a white ball in its abdomen. I'm trying to get a picture, but he is hiding in my monti cap. Any ideas?? Can it be an infection?? Can it be ready to lay eggs?? Please help!!

Oh and it isn't eating and not moving out of the Monti Cap at all.

Is the whole body swollen or just a lump on one side? If it's the whole body, and you have a pair of gobies, it is possible to be full of eggs.

Does the fish seem to be having any issues with buoyancy? Positive or negative in any way?
I wish I had more advice for you, but it's hard to tell what is wrong with these guys. Coming on over night leads me to think it's not a parasite. Could be an fast moving bacterial infection which if that's the case treating probably wouldn't be very effective at this point. Besides the fact that you would need to catch the fish and move it to a separate tank for treatment.

I'll look through some of my fish medical treatment books and see if I can find anything. Hopefully it is just eggs and this will correct itself.

It looks as if only one side is swollen...It's swollen and white almost like there is a lump under the skin. I do not believe he/she is having a problem with buoyancy, but I can't really tell because he hasn't left the middle of my monti cap. I only have the one clown goby....is it possible that they can have eggs without a mate?

One side definitely wouldn't be eggs. Plus you need a pair to get eggs, they won't produce them with just one.

With it not leaving the middle of the cap that is going to make any treatment really difficult. You have to treat in a separate tank. I looked through my books quickly last night and didn't see anything but will look again today.

How's the goby doing?

It's hard to suggest any treatment plan without knowing if it is a parasitic or bacterial issue. The treatments for each differ greatly.

I got him into the QT....and I took a shot and I've been treating with Maracyn 2 since Monday. He looks to possibly be doing a little better, but he still isn't eating and is breathing very heavily....but it looks like the swelling has come down slightly.

That's great to hear. Hopefully it works. If after the treatment he still isn't better let me know and we'll try something else.

Can you take a pic of it now that it's in the QT tank? I'm certainly no expert on treating fish, but having a visual reference might help someone with more experience.

Hope it gets better soon though.

First course of antibiotics ended Friday. THe swelling looks a lot better and he is swimming more, but I haven't seen him eat and his tail and dorsal fins are brown on the edges and fraying. I'm thinking about starting 1 more course of antibiotics in hopes of helping the fins and the rest of the swelling.

Switch antibiotics. See if you can get Furan-2 from the LFS. It is a stronger broader spectrum medicine.

I'll have to try and get some.

Here's 2 pics I just shot...don't think he's going to make it:

Some good news....I wasn't able to find the other antibiotic, but I started a second course of the Maracyn 2 4 days ago. The goby is swimming around more and even though he is really skinny he is eating more and more everyday. He may pull through. He's evening perching on the glass again!

Glad to hear he's getting better. Let's hope for a full recovery, eating is definitely a sign of improvement.
