The idea of a club run tank has been brought up a few times in the past but now with a dawn of a new an hopefully stronger re-organization of the club on the horizon prehapes we can put some effort into this idea. As of late the clubs threads have been over flowing with debate regarding the structure of the club and its activities prehaps a we lost sight of what we are all here to do which is grow reefs, so here is an idea that might bring in a little care an participation from our members.
Using are connections with local places such as jenkinsons aquarium Camden aquarium or other such places we reach out and secure a place to host the tank once a place is secured then with dontations of equipment from the members and prehapes in the future equipment donations from our vendors we put together a nice display tank.
The members of the club set up a volunteer rotating schedule in which our members will go and maintain the tank, doing things such as water chemistry and cleaning ECT...
The stocking of the tank will also be donations prehaps a frags cut from members tanks and donated to the project, fish donated by members or of course vendors in the future.
The display tank will be sorrounded by a nicley designed club banner, educational information on the tank its stock with recognition of the each part donated by a member or sponsor
Also information pertaining to global reefs and there status prehapes indicating where certain corals that inhabit are tank are found or originally collected be for they wound up in are tank ECT..
And then finally a recruitment flyer and a donation box.

This is obviously something that cant happen over night but can be done if our members come together to make it happen.

So for now I ask for feed back prehapes some ideas. I also ask for those of you interested to send me messages with your name so I can put together a list to bring to the new board.

And one last thing anyone with any connections to a place that will be a good place to host the tank please let me know.

Great idea in theory. But what happens when the volunteer doesn't make it for the maintenance? What happens when the tank has a problem? What happens when the BOD switches and they don't want to be bothered with the tank any longer? The club would be better off finding places that want to set up tanks and just help support them in the endeavor. Not an NJRC run tank.

Something at Jenkinsons might be nice if they have the space. Agree they would run it.
Perhaps we could stock it with a few corals and donate any fish that we need to rehome.
If anyone has aextra frags we can call them and bring them down.
Really no loss to us and a way to get a banner or advertisement in a local NJ aquarium (perhaps even brochures on the counter).

Look I see all your concerns and that's why I asked for feed back. By maintain this wouldn't be all on the club the maitance schedule is more of a thing for use to do larger maitance, feeding and basic stuff would be on the host. Also things like larger scale problems we could resolve by having a regular list of volunteers local to the host site willing to help these people would be members who volunteer so this won't mean someone, will be stuck doing it if you, cant you don't volunteer.
As for the part about the board.. I feel like a broken record but yes the board is the decision making body of the club they handle the admin aspect but they are not the gods of the club the members as a whole over all decide on,what the club does the board just directs the activities they can only advised things like if its with in,the clubs financial range or acceptable by the rules pertaining to are non for profit status... Yes they have power to do things but the membership has the power to install and remove them especially if your a paid member never forget that you have a voice and a vote on every single club activity some may not like to hear this but its the truth as a club member you have a right to know how things are done and why you also have a right to stop something you don't like .. For instance the clubs colors are gonna change you have a right to say "No I don't like that idea" and have a vote on it if your vote passes the colors don't change if the membership votes in favor then the colors get changed .. So in,theory if we do decide that a club tanks a good idea and a future board doesn't want it regardless of there title those people would have to bring it to a vote they cant just take it away.

Regarding the old tanks the club sponsored can any one post details about them, the process involved, and what wound up happening to them why they failed ECT..
From, this maybe we can learn how to do it better should we decided to do another

And lastly what happened to the equipment from the old tanks its club property did we recover it?

We had one in Camden and it didnt pan out I went there 15 times to clean it up and took a ton of corals out of my own tank, and the lady that was to look after everything she let the sump go dry and burn up all the pumps and the heaters so I quit and never went up there again.

No a good idea. Not everyone understands what they are committing to. The onus will be on NJRC and that can/will back fire.

Sorry, but I have to be honest here.

Honesty is appreciated again this forum was created to feel out the idea. I wasnt present for past tanks so I can't know what happened there .. Concidering there were two attempts in,the past it was obviously at one time thought to be a good idea. Twice evidently. Though I am not ready to throw in the towel on,the idea yet so now that we know its failed how if those two tanks could have worked out better could it have been done what changes woulda made them a success

Why? Do you want to be the one to do it, yet again? Look at the poll you posted, it is you against 7. Why waste you time and energy to a lost cause?

As someone who was very involved with the Camden experiment I would say don't do it. However, it sounds like something you are passionate about so I will at least try and give some guidance. (I also voted no in the poll).

Location: this is really what kills the project as a good location is paramount and the perfect situation really does not exist. How stable is the temp? Access to water? Accessible to club members on a pretty concisitent basis? Who is maintaining/feeding on a consistent basis? Emergency protocols?

Long term survival: People and rules can change so what sounds amazing now might change in 6 months. This is another variable you cannot solve or plan for that can quickly and abruptly end a tank.

Solution: Find a vendor or a very trusted reefer and have a dedicated club frag tank. People can donate to it and frag it out for meetings and stuff like that. Have a thread open just for that and giving updates and growouts. I am sure people will donate some equipment and what not.

@Sunny what makes you assume that I was the one, vote yes? When I have more then the total number of people who voted in my message box telling me they are interested in something of the nature. It seems to me that as far as anything goes with this club its much easier for people to say "can't be done" then it is to find people willing to try to find away for something to be done. My questioning was simply away of finding out what works and doesn't this whole thread was simply away of trying to get the club involved in something other than bickering.
Ill admit it the tank idea probably won't happen but befor you put the idea to bed you should look at all possible options because maybe you can come up with something better then the original idea .

Case in point @mnat the idea of a club frag tank is awesome I had actually thought of something like that but didn't know how to word it as good as you just did and guess what that idea may never have come to light if there wasn't someone trying to find an idea..

Its sad really how much negativity comes out over a simple idea.. I Honestly can now see very clearly why people choose to leave instead of keep trying. You would think someone was threatening to take away from another's personal tank by voiceing there passion for an idea. What's even more sad is that this original post was created with the want to bring the club members closer together when its so clear now why we are so far apart.. Sorry I didn't realise an idea to make the club better would make so many of you upset and feel the need to make another feel unworthy of a conversation.

Thanks for idea Jeremy, we appreciate the effort. After hearing that it’s been tried a couple times in the past and hasn’t worked, we should move on. Doing the same this and expecting a different result isn’t productive.

@Jeremy. I don't feel anyone here was trying to be so negative just providing the background of what happened in the past for those that were not around.
I know the Camden one was a big one and many people were involved only to see that the CA let if fail. Why I bowed out when they tried Jenks.

The idea of a NJRC frag tank ran by a paid member is totally different concept.
