CO2 Scrubber

Yes it works if you have a CO2 problem and you change out the media when it becomes saturated. Because of the frequent media changes (dependant on CO2 levels in your house), it can get rather costly. The poorman’s CO2 fix is to run a hose from the air pick-up on your skimmer to outside your house. The only one-time cost is for the hose….the clean air is free (for now).

FYI, the media is the same stuff that is used in scuba re-breather units.

HMMMM that is not poor man's fix, that is smart fix. My sump is about 5 feet from window in basement. :) I know where I will get my free air from!!! Thanks!

Unfortunately, my tank is nowhere near a window so the cheap/smart method isn't possible for me.

Also, the item you linked is discontinued. The new item(s) they suggest are a basic media reactor and This stuff

I was thinking about trying this stuff in my dual reactor (can easily move my carbon & gfo into the same canister to do this) but the soda lime media is quite expensive. ($50 for about 7 canisters worth) Not sure I want to start that added maintenance cost just yet.

I did the scrubber thing and took it down cause I was going through media every few days. My ph was at 6.9 without the media. With the media I was at 8.0. Running a hose to my garage and attached to the air inlet of my skimmer, ph is at 8.2. But guess what I noticed by doing the hose thing? I noticed my heater turning on more cause the skimmer is sucking in cold air from the outside constantly.

Yes I know it is. I just want to give people a idea of what I was talking about. I was trying to aviod driping kalk to keep the ph up when the lights are off. Also to avoid some type of equipment failure (kalk drip getting stuck on) This looks like the easier way to go. If the meda doesn't last to long I don't want to add any more cost to my tank then I already have running zeovit and esv salt. My ph is 8.0-8.4 over the day windows open or shut. I'll give the line out the window trick a try to see if I see a difference. I was just looking for the extra bump in ph to make thing more stable. Thanks for all of the replys.

I was using it as well and it definitely bumps your ph but the problem I started to have was as soon as the weather turns a little and more windows are open in my house....it was sending my ph thru the roof.

I'm not sure where your concern is. If your tank and sump isn't sealed in some way with lids, etc. and you have a decent skimmer, and if the lowest reading is 8.0, there's really nothing to worry about.

Here's a good read:

I'm not losing sleep over it. Was just asking for input/review from people who used this type of method to raise the ph a little bit. If it works and keeps the ph more stable. That would overall benefit the tank of having less of a swing during the day/night hours.
