Controller Probes and Expansions

I have looked at several controllers online and I must say I do not understand the boasts that they can expand and support a hundred probes.

Now I get that someone may have a few tanks, but a hundred probes?

I have seen probes primarily for

PH
Temp
ORP
Salinity

are there any other reliable probes out there? Are the PH and Salinity probes considered reliable?

I have heard ORP is not typically required unless you are running ozone. Thoughts?

Am I missing something significant?

A nice function is being able to run multiples of the same probe. Say for instance you're running a Calcium reactor, you can monitor not just tank pH but also that of the effluent. Multiple temp probes in for extra security or it your sump and display might be in rooms at different temp levels.

The 4 probe types are as reliable as the calibration and maintenance of them. (disclaimer: I haven't looked too hard at salinity probes yet but I know a few reefers that swear by them.) ORP can tell you if there was a change to something in your tank if your not running ozone. If that change was good, bad, or even noticed is a completely different story though.

The other thing is that controllers can clean up some of the electrical rats nests that we create as well and eliminate separate timers.
