I got a neat coral from a friend that he couldn’t remember the name of, very similar in looks to a Duncan. After some research I’m pretty sure it’s turbinaria peltata, which I’ve seen referred to by several common names, including Pagoda Cup Coral on melev’s reef website. I read elsewhere that there was thought to classify it in the Duncan family but the growth pattern is different enough it wasn’t reclassified. The liveaquaria picture looks much different, but they have a turninaria sp that looks similar available in an LPS variety pack.
Here’s some pictures of the MR and LA pages on it, and in my tank in dark with and without a flash, and in light; also a picture from LA unlabeled of the sp. A Duncan is in front of it in my tank pictures.
What do you all think? Duncan variant or turbinaria? Does anyone know this by a different name?
