Coolaid's 28g Nano Cube

Some new pics..
These are all taken under daylights so not getting the color pop of blues.

You know.. for all the pics we post.. I almost never see people post pics of themselves give or take a reflection here or there.. lol

Wife and I at our friends Civil Union Ceremony. Sadly they where in a bus accident on their honey moon when taking a trip to the grand canyon from vegas. One of them broke her ancle very badly and the other broke her back. Both are still int he hospital in 2 separate states.. :(

My cloves.. Tried to show the spreading. They have attached a runner or two on to the live rock from the plug. They are stretching for light, but if they are growing I don't want to move em.

some of your stock looks amazingly familiar! lol Love that shot of the torch with the domino! And that scoly has grown huge. You weren't kidding.

Thanks (3 months late, but at least I got it in)

So, yea.. I've been neglecting this thread..

LEts see... The domino hosted my orange torch to death (shawn, I need another in your next order!! 2-3 heads would be nice)

I banished the domino to my macro algae tank (which has grown to a 20L) I adopted a pink stripe dottieback, and a cherub angel in the algae tank also.. I lost my male mollie unfortunately shortly after the female gave birth he was stuck to my powerhead.. Waiting on gulf coast ecosystems to come back from vacation and send me my new macro's (got a few more calcareous species as they seem to really love that tank. MErmaid fans have shot up about 8 new fans and there has been a nice bloom of coraline in that tank.. already spotting the back wall in 3-4 colors.

My mandarin died new years day.. He must have been looking for food in a hole that was too small for his body and got stuck.. very sad as i spent a LOT of time keeping him fat and healthy with 2x daily frozen feedings in a little plexiglass box I made for him to eat in. Oh yea.. and training him to eat frozen then training him to go into the stupid box!! I think I am going to hold off on another one until I have a bigger tank that I don't have to worry about training as much.

Everything else is doing well.. My zoo garden is plugging along and I'm seeing nice growth, my frogspawns (and the new octospawn I just got) are doing VERY well.. I even noticed a couple of tiny tiny heads attached to a few pieces of live rock.. They where not ripped off tentacles but actually 3-4 really small tentacles, but then I bought an mp10 and it blew them off the rock and into my skimmer. Note to self, it only needs to be placed on about 40% in your little cube..

Oh, how could I forget.. I did add a little livestock to the reef tank too.. I got a pair of barnacle blennies.. My wife fell in love with that at the meeting and they where a must have.. I also purchased her 2 coco worms as well.. That should shut her up for a little while! ha!

Speaking of cubes.. is there any way someone can edit my thread to reflect the 28 gallon tank instead of my old 12?

I've added a couple of birds nest corals thanks for Ray, and I got to see his amazing tanks. The couple of members tanks that I have gotten to see really inspire me for my future setup when we move into our new house (with full basement!!!!!!)

I have a few things on order.. 2 sexy shrimp, a sea pen, and a christmas tree rock (wife loves them too, but doens't give a crap about the cool stuff like the mp10, or the acro corals.. ugh.. women! ;)

I also took advantage of the bogo sale that Dr. Mac is running and got 4 birds nest corals that I didn't have yet. That should fill out my top shelf perfectly. I decided to go with those, cats paw, and monti digita up top rather then acro's.. I like them more for some reason.

So, I guess it's picture time..

Not all open but some of the zoo's this was acouple of weeks ago they are much more filled in since then.
IMG_8504_zps2c3ad1cc.jpg

Just a day after putting it in the tank.. it is probably double that size now that it's adjusted and puffing out. It's more of a wall frogspawn then a full octospawn, but I still really love it.

Macro tank (having major dino issues right now, and afraid to go lights out for too long since it's all plantlife) I'm doing daily water changes and siphoning out what I can but no luck.. I'm raising the ph as my next step and then if that fails pulling everything out and rinsing it in RO/di and replacing the sand.

Blue Orchodes check out that hermit in the back.. he is like traffic cone orange.. really cool.. I got him and another just like him from aqua oceans in toms river.

I forget the name of this macro.. but it is really cool too.. it looks like codium but brown and stiff hairs on it. Also my departed mollie in the back.

Cleaner I picked up from a member.. loves cleaning the fish, and my hand. All the fish accept his cleaning too.. even the mollie!

Here is a shot of my mandarin.. Really bummed about losing him.. he was doing AMAZINGLY well and so personable. he would see me and come right up the the front glass hoping I was getting his feeding box. These are by far my favorite fish. One day I will get one, or a pair depending on final size of my big tank.

Love the macro tank! I really think the various macros are pretty cool and add a nice touch to any system. What are you using for lighting?

Pete

I use a nova extreme in the front (for color) with 1 actinic one 10000k and in the back (for plant growth) I use 4 CFL 6500k bulbs in a diy fixture that isn't pretty but works and is hidden under the cabinet the tank sits under, and the nova fixture in the front.

I will be adding fans to both the fixtures to bring heat levels down a bit.

Per your request, I have edited the title of your thread.

The tank is looking really nice!

Your wife has good taste with her coco worms, barnacle blennies, and christmas tree rock ;)
With the christmas tree worms, even more than the coco worms, you may want to dose live phyto. They seem to do best for me when I feed live phyto 2x per week. From my experience, typically when the porites arrives, it tends to be in pretty rough shape (I have only seen one rock come in with nice porites and nice worms- and I bought it immediately), it can be a clue as to the health of the worms as well. If the coral got insufficient light, in all likelihood the worms will need some extra attention and feeding as well. I have found that the Porites the worms tend to colonize does best in lower light, with low to medium flow. When the rock arrives, look it over carefully for algae. Even if the porites comes in browned out, and dying, you have a shot at saving it if you try. You want to keep it alive if at all possible; otherwise, as the worm's tubes grow over time, they will be grow outside of the porites, and it will be easier for your fish to eat them and the tubes may begin to grow algae (my first two christmas tree worms were a rescue, the LFS gave them to me after the porites died). Watch your angel, some of them will take a liking to the worms and try to eat them.

Sorry to hear you lost your manderine. That was the biggest one I ever seen in person. Do you know what happened?

I do dose phyto for a few things I have in there. thanks for the tip though :)

Unfortunately I got an email from the place I ordered the christmas tree rock, sea pen (which I am glad didn't come because I changed my mind on that anyway) and the sexy shrimp would not be shipped due to weather being cold.. They said they would ship it for today.. Yesterday I got an email that they where sold out of the sexy shrimp and the christmas tree rock.. So, I just asked to cancel the order and I will try again later.. In all actuality I am done with them. This is the second time I've ordered and they didn't come through.. I'll just stop in next time I am out in Lancaster and get stuff that I know is there.. lol

The mandarin got wedged in a hole, or joint between 2 rocks.. I went to check out the tank, and thought it was weird that he wasn't sleeping in his normal spot.. He ALWAYS slept on my mushroom rock.. I grabbed the flashlight and saw him underneath the ledge.. he was fully colored which again I thought was strange because when he slept he went very pale. I reached in to nudge him to see if he would move, and noticed he was stuck.. Pulled him out (he was really jammed in there) and he was DOA. :( still really bummed..

Oh yea, and that angel is in my macro algae tank.. I do not mix angels and corals.. lol Plants only. My reef has the 2 barnacle blennies, a oddball clown pair (one perc one occ and they are fully paired.. got em from zoanut already paired up) a pistol / goby (my first purchase) a trio of chromis, and a fairy wrasse who I love, but I am debating on moving into the other tank because he is a bully to the chromis. Heavy stock, but I over skim and run a phosban.. plus extra media in an intank brand media basket. It's not a perfect tank but everything is growing and all the fish in there are healthy and been in there for a long time. Oh and I switched a firefish from the macro into the reef when I moved the Domino to the macro tank cause he would just bully that one too..

So, at some point in the future we will be moving into our new house.. The goal after this move is to build my dream tank.. Top will be a 72x24x24 under is a 40 breeder which will be part sump part display refugium and the 2 sides are 25g cubes.

This built is inspired by a friend of mine who built something very similar with a 75g /40b sump and a top off tank with kalk on one side.. I'm modifying the idea with the 2 extra tanks because I want a mantis and frog fish as well.

On the back will be a 5 foot hang on back deep sand bed / cheato, ulva and mangrove refugium that be fed by it's own pump. On each side will have a 6 inch chamber filled with liverock rubble then it will spill over the tank wall back into the main tank.. I'm still working on the basics of it and how to prevent too much bubbling from the spill over.

I did a sketch up of the basic idea.. This will not be any time soon, but I like to get my plans on "paper" so I can tweak them as I plan this big project out.

Thanks, I don't think it needs to be lowered. I only run it at about 40% in reef crest mode so I don't get the air vortex I also have a shield coming so i can raise it a little more. I like the agitation on the top of the water. I have it set to run at about 20% at night. The molly was in my other tank which uses a korelia and jbj setup but only had the Korelia at the time of his death.

Wow, where to start.. lol

I've made a LOT of changes..

I guess I'll start with lighting.. The nanocube 28 led pro is great, but the one issue I have is that it doesn't have any blues in the daylight lamps.. It does have the 2 1w moonlights and the 4 dusk dawns.. but It doesn't help much with adding pop and color..

So, I went ahead and ordered 2 stunner strips with the reflectors. I got 1 403 nm UV strip and one royal blue / magenta strip.. It really gives the corals great color and pop. Very happy with it.. I used exterior double sided tape to put them to the front of the daylights. I feel that with the reflectors it narrows the light too much for a nano cube application so I don't use them much better spread without them. After adding the 2 strips to the front and being so impressed I got 2 more of the same combo for the back half. I think it's going to look great once they are in.

I may add 2 of the actinic blues they have for the sides down the road. Once I get a controller I will set them on a cycle with the stock lights to get a decent light cycle going. I guess I could do it with another power supply and a couple of timers too..

I also added a bunch of corals and removed some since my last post.. I've decided to forgo sps so I gave them to a friend and moved some to my macro tank. I added a dendro, and a suncoral to my budding nps collection.. I got a couple more verities of frogspawn and hammer corals, and torch. I got another orange, added an indo and a aussie. I got a nice grape coral head, and then got 2 more 3 headers all slightly different colors. Still new to the tank so not puffed up fully yet.. probably in a week they should be settled fully and happy. I have them all on the same level as my other frogspawns which are very happy. I added a few new zoas.. nice darth maul pally frag, some various others.. 3 new acans too.. Everything is looking good. I also got a HUGE (well for my tank) 6" maze brain.. a new warpaint scolly, and a cool little lobo.. I think that covers it.. lol

I'll get some pics up when I get some free time.

Thanks for posting your experiences and ideas!!! I'm setting up a 29g cube too and like where your going on yours... Also love the macro tank and your design plan with the specific tanks and visiable fuge.

Thanks. I made a couple of videos of the 3 main tanks. (I also have a 120 tall for non social turtles that where banished from the main tank :)

The 28/29 gallon tanks are really nice. Still a non, but enough space to do some really interesting things with it.. The LED's on the jbj are nice, but I have had to do some work as you see to get theme where they really need to be.. The ballasts they use are total crap though. The good part is you don't need a chiller to get the higher light output. Honestly, if I had the means and knew what I know now when I first started, I probably would have went with a larger cube tank and done an overflow to a sump.. I think it would make things much easier.. but the all in ones are still a great product.

On another note.. my new scolly was a little too close to my lobo.. when they expanded they touched, and I fried a thumb sized spot in it on the right side :( I moved it and blew off the gunk as much as I could. Sadly it is bare to the skeleton, but the mouth has since closed again and I am praying it recovers. I really am pissed about that because I am usually so careful about placement of things.. Live and learn.. expensive mistake if it doesn't recover. The lobo is fine.. like nothing happened at all.

Anyone have any advise on helping it recover faster, or to ensure it returns to health?

Here are the links.. please mind, I am not the greatest at filming..

Not sure when I will be able to do my dream setup.. but one day I will have it. :)
