Coral sunscreen

pretty cool. that could change the industry or at least the way we look at the symbionic relationship.
We already know how we can shock our corals from bulb changes and types of lighting. sounds like the 400 watt halides build up this risistance thus giving the coral more strenth to grow. not that I would ever use them
I want a lot more proof before I down a pill and start changing colors

I hate to be the skeptic here, but water (and all that crap that floats in it) has tremendous diffusive and absorptive capability. It (water) is 800 times as dense as air. If we could live between 10 to 30 feet underwater, we wouldn’t have to worry about getting a sunburn….or a tan, for that fact…..no coral genetic material needed. Here is a graph showing the absorption per wavelength in one meter (metre for you English) of three different kinds of water. Note UVA and UVB….they’re the “burner” wavelengths.

The other factor with water is it’s reflective nature (at the surface). Decent percentages of light don’t start to penetrate until the sun is up over 45 degrees. The point I’m making is that there is also a loss of amount of light underwater from the reflective nature of water. Even when the sun is directly overhead, three percent of light is lost to reflection.

I think this is great that they are looking at the genetic components of coral and the symbiotic algae living within…..hopefully some good science going on there. However, I still remain a bit of a skeptic on it’s uses for sunscreens….it’s the depth of water acting as the sunscreen…..for us, can’t beat micronized zinc oxide to block out the damaging effects of sun….and apply often.

Mark, thanks for sharing....still interesting.

I was kind of thinking the same thing, but didn't want to be a party pooper. I agree it's a good idea to investigate the theory though.

George, are you calling me a party pooper? Oh, you have permanently damaged my fragile male ego….what little I had left. (J/K) Well, let me look at the bright side, I’ve been called worse.:grin::grin:
