CPU fans?

I'm looking for some CPU fans where can i find them? I heard radio shack has both fans and the 12v adapters. Are the ones they sell quiet?

Yes you can get them from radio shack. I purchased a couple from Radio Shack but found a better deal and selection on Ebay.

One thing to keep in mind when using computer fans on a saltwater tank, the bearings are not sealed and eventually will fail from the salt creep.

They make ones just for aquarium use, but you will definitely pay the price for them.

Yea but those ones are a lot more... my plan was to have one on each side of the hood blowing air in and maybe one blowing air out from the top or just a hole with a finger guard.

CPU fan, or something a bit larger? For CPU fans go here http://www.newegg.com
I am a computer and network engineer / tech. I have been in business for myself for about the last 9 years now. Newegg is where I get most of my computer equipment.
Now, if your looking for a larger type of fan, an old Power Supply fan should probably do. I have a couple of old Power Supply fans sitting right here next to me. If that is what you need, let me know. I would be more than happy to give up 1 or 2.

Hope this helps!

What else is there ???
keep them away from water splashes.

It's not just the splashing. The salt will be picked up from the air over the tank and pulled into the bearings. This will in turn shorten their life span.

Yes the others are more expensive, but if you figure in the replacemnt factor it comes out about the same overe time. If the CPU fans only last 1/3 of the time of the aquarium fans, they will cost you 3x the amount of a CPU fan in replacement costs. Is this still going to be cheaper than buying a sealed one up front?

Does anyone know the approximate lifespan of a CPU fan in a canopy of a tank with no top? I know there are a lot of factors, but any idea? 6 months, 1 year?

I'm sorry. Maybe I needed to be more clear. How long can I expect one to last in the canopy considering the salt issues mentinoed above in the thread?

Thanks, I'm at little at ease. I've had mine in a little over 7 months and they have just stopped working. Not an easy job taking the canopy off and replacing so the next time I will get fans that are made for aquariums.

I have 2 of the EBAY fans with the sensor on my tank for 2 years maybe longer. I wouldn't pay extra for the sensor. Mine run constantly whether the lights are on or off. They will last much longer if they are blowing air INTO the canopy rather than sucking it out.
