Dead Fish

Came home today to my corals are all looking good and all my fish are dead! I had 3 clowns that i have had for about 2 years. Checked my parameters and all looks good. Salinity is about 1.021, Temp is 79, pH is 7.8, No nitrates, No ammonia, 0.4 phosphates. I am at a loss. I topped it off with clean freshwater from my RO last night, no differnt then i always do. Poor fishies, any ideas what may have happened?

Were they wearing brand new Nikes and purple shrouds over their heads?

Did you have a power outage today? Lack of oxygen will kill fish faster than it will affect the corals.

No power outages, RO water is good and DO is up around 15-16 MG/L. I guess i will do a few water changes over the next week or so and make sure anything is out of there before putting any fish back in there. Fish seemed fine, they ate like champs last night. Food was same i always feed them so i can't blame it on that either. My wife even liked them so i can't blame her for fishslaughter either. Has me baffled.

.... I know these are going to be those stupid, common sense things that you'll probably say, "Well, shoot, Kathain Bowen, how much of an idiot do you think I am?" when I ask it.... but....

Have you tested out your RO water for temp, pH, etc, etc, etc? Checked for anything unusual that could have fallen into the tank? Did you own any sea cucumbers, sea apples, puffers, etc? Have you noticed any unusual noises about your tank? Have you tried "spot-light" searching it at night? Did you put your hands into the tank last night (if so, is there any chance you had household cleaners, soaps, perfumes, etc. on them?). If there enough agitation at the top of the water to break the surface tension and enhance gaseous exchange?

I know, it's all common sense things, like when you call up a tech support network and get the standard run of questions like 'Is your computer plugged in? Did you try restarting it?" However, it always seems like those common sense things that nip us all in the behind in the end.

I've had this happen twice in my system...and I still haven't figured out what the problem was...I've lost tons of $$ (and some beautiful fish!) to this problem...

Hopefully you find out the cause of it, or else you will be like me and constantly wonder if it's going to happen again.

Do you possible have an electrical short anywhere? I had this happen just before Easter and again a couple of days after the November meeting at my house. In my case fish were fine but corals suffered but it depends on the stray voltage/amps.

Sometimes when you put your hand in the tank you can't feel anything but if you have something like a paper cut on a finger and put that in the tank you can feel the "buzz" at the area of the cut. Could be a heater or pump leaking voltage.

Just another option/thing to check on.
