Diy fish traps

Anyone have experience with building and using one? My orange spot rabbit fish has decided to rip thru all of my zoa colonies in the last three days. I was able to save a few by removing the rock they were on and placing in my frag tank but now I am afraid he will turn on my lps. So, its time for his removal and he will be placed in my frag tank. At which point I will put him up for sale or trade but should only be kept in an sps or fish only tank.

I’ve had good luck with a soda bottle trap. The secret is to include a hole in the middle of the bottle that you pump food into the bottle. Once the food is squirted into the bottle using a turkey baster, you occasionally squirt the turkey baster to create a snow globe effect.with the food. The fish sees this and darts into the bottle

thanks Paul. I made the soda bottle trap last night but the only thing I got was a line of hermits going in there after the food. I will add the extra hole and try to give it the snow globe effect. the fish knows his time is up because now he goes into hidding as soon as I get near the tank.

I built one out of egg crate. A slender box with an opening small enough that bigger fish can't get in. Then I put a half wall, sort of like a maze. Then I used a T off the egg crate to tie food to. Tie a string and wait. It works but takes time. My family always laughs at me when I break it out.

The quickest thing for me was using size 24 fly fishing hooks and a little piece of shrimp. You just have to crush down the barb so the fish comes off without any harm. I even have some extra hooks if you'd need them.

I saw that you did that and have thought about it but Im afraid i might hook one of my Japanese swallow tails by mistake and i dont want anything to happen to them.

If the rabbit fish has a distinct area it goes to at night then you could just try and fish for it then. When I did it for my fish I just fed the other fish pellets on one side of the tank and then put the bait in on the hook near my dotty back.
