diy overflow chamber

hey, so i decided to downgrade from my 75aga to a aga 40 breeder, i wanted to keep this setup in my room, so i wanted it be relatively every quiet. I was thinking of the duro standpipe..I am pretty sure the bottom isn't tempered, but will double check by calling all glass aquarium. So i searched and couldn't really find anyone who used the durso and also diy a internal overflow chamber? i can make one out to acrylic maybe? Can anyone help me with a picture of how they did the overflow design or maybe a link? thanks in advance

well i know i can make one, but not sure where it's best positioned? center or corner? Also i would like to get a pic of the overflow chamber design, to get an idea..Thanks

If it were me, I would make the overflow external. You will get more real estate that way since you are downgrading from 75. I would put it in the middle. If you want something really simple. Drill a 1 1/2 inch hole on the back glass, and put a durso standpipe on it. You can turn the 90 degree elbow facing up so the water can overflow into the 90 degree elbow. Make sure you put some type of net or strainer on the 90 so that no critter go in there and clog it. You can do this on both back corner as well and not just the middle.

So are u sayin to drill hole n put just the 90 directly or wit the overflow? Sry i'm noon web it comes to this. I thought witout overflow it can drain out all water? For overflow better to just make one? Thx

I mean like this:

so i have to drill the bulkhead relatively high up on the tank? wouldn't it drain all the water out?

If you take a look at the picture, it shows that the hole is drilled near the top edge. No, it will not all drain. Though you must have enough space in your sump to accommodate the little water that will go down when the return pump is turned off.

sorry, didn't notice that, ok now its clear, this setup is relatively quiet? so standard threaded bulkhead Fitting 1 inch should be fine? I'll put it right in the middle of the back. drill size should be 1 3/4"? can i order an external durso from rich? or should i just make it? Thanks for all the help...

Just make it.

The end cap and maybe the short piece of pipe at the top, wrap a couple of times with Teflon and push the two pieces together.  This way you can disassemble easily for cleaning.

In addition, it was discussed in the text above, but not shown in the picture…inside the tank use a 90° elbow with a short piece of pipe and then the intake strainer.  Again, using Teflon to take apart to adjust tank water height (by shortening or using a long piece) and to clean. This also allows for you not to be so precise where you drill the hole…just make sure it’s far enough below the tank to fit the 90 and short piece of pipe.

So your saying from the bulkhead, add like some pvc, then add a 90 facing up, from there add another pvc(adjustable) then to strainer? so strainer should be able to surface skim? thx for all the inputs :) sorry for all the obvious question, i just like to make sure of myself i'm gonna do it right lol..

Sorry for my ignorance but what is a dorso pipe? I have an eshopp overflow that I plan to use with a sump once I make it. But am not sure how to set it up. It came w/ a bulkhead and a foam prefilter for the pipe on the outside box. Will this setup be noisy?

Durso standpipes are named after Richard Durso's design (AGA/Aqueon copies it in those mega flow kits).

I went the DIY method (lowes/HD) - I honestly was so intimidated by it but everyone here was so encouraging and it worked! i didn't even have to adjust the hole or height - everything went fine. Saved me $$$.

To stop the girgling noise you have to drill a small hole in the top cap of the pipe to allow air to escape and allow for the suction to continue.
Other wise the air conitues down through the pipe to the sump which also decreases the flow.

Hey Guys... this may sound absolutely ridiculous, but I am trying to do an overflow of some sorts to a 10g or 15g tank to another 10g tank sump. What would you guys suggest? My "broken/leaking" 10g tank would be the sump and I plan on buying another 10gal or 15gal in a few days to replace the one that broke. Anyway, I was considering dumping the HOB filter and making it more exotic. Is it worth the hassle?

i would say it's feasible. but to answer your question, is it worth the hassle? that is a personal question. for me that would not be worth the hassle. i would buy a commercially made overflow. if you must make your own then make one using PVC rather than an overflow box but again a personal decision...

I dont understand how that diagram in the begining of the thread is a durso. It looks like the water will only cover up half the bulkhead. The durso has to have the pipe hole completely submerged in water with a downward pointing elbow to trap the noise inside and a small vent on the top to let in air.
