I started SPS a few months ago, and all was going fantastic.
Over the past few days, I've been losing a few nice pieces that were doing great.
Realized Thursday that my favorite piece, a 6" yellow slimer with 3 branches, was no more.
A purple acropora, about 4" with 8-10 branches, was gone.
My second favorite piece, a red montipora digitata, good size, is probably too far gone for recovery.
All others not well.
Disappointing to say the least.

Went nuts checking parameters, all is good. Couldn't figure it out.
Then, on a guess, I checked the temp.
I usually leave my AC on through the day, at 76, and I leave the overhead fans on, cuz I have fish, and JCP&L love me.
But, with the extreme heat, seems my tank jumped from a stable 78.5 a few weeks ago, to 82.7, for lord knows how long, possibly weeks.
And with my computer having blown a few weeks ago, I had no warning of increased temps.
Thus, the heat has claimed the top 1/3 of my tank. :(

Rectified the situation by opening the cabinet and directing a box fan on high at it and turned off the gyre (still running MPs).
Tank now at an acceptable 79.5
I was fine last year (and before). Just seems these crazy temps took a toll.
May purchase a cooler next year if temps predicted to be at these levels again.

So, just a heads up for all you folks if your SPS is acting funky.

I've been wondering how high the temperature sps can handle, now I know, less than 82.7 degrees. I do have to keep the a/c on even when we are not home so jcp&l loves me too. I have a nice sized green slimer when you're ready. Let me know when you're in my area.

Joe, that yellow/green slimer I lost was the one we traded. Would love to get another piece once I get the temp level again. Thanks for the offer.

Trio, did just that, opened the top to the ceiling fans and opened the bottom cabinet to a box fan. Working well. Figure once the temps outside drop back down into the 80's I should be good.

Tiger, yeah, had a Reefkeeper system I bought used and got a year plus out of, then it just went to pot. I was planning to pick up a new one for winter as I was thinking heat control, never thought of an overheat situation from the natural environment. At least I still have the outlet strips and temp probes, just need to replace the main display.

Disappointing as I lost a few very nice pieces, but they will eventually be replaced and will grow again.

Temp spikes are always a bugger and SPS are the first to feel it. Just watch your salinity over the next couple weeks, adding a fan will increase evaporation rates which can lead to more top off and lower salinity.
