Pickling Lime, is, in effect, kalkwasser, and its a heck of a lot cheaper.

I read in a reef2reef forum of someone stirring this pickling lime into their RODI top off and that's all they used for years. His tank looks great and it seems like such a simple DIY (kinda) kalkwasser.

Kalk is really hard on pumps. It’s cheap but it has its limits. If you have a large tank it’s not a good solution.
Kalk for the aquarium is cheap I wouldn’t risk using something that’s for gardening to save $20.
If you are going to use kalk you should use it with a doser and not your ato. That way you can control what you are dosing.

Yeah but it’s not worth it. Aquarium kalkwasser is so cheap. It’s not worth the risk. It’s $20 I got this like two years ago and I still have some.
