dosing vodka?

I won't comment whether or not it works. In a nutshell, what it purportedly does is supply a food source for the bacteria to proliferate, thereby reducing you nitrogen waste products (ammonia/nitrite/nitrate).

does it work and what does it do. first you must know what it does to find out if it works or not.
anyway, i've been doing it but have recently stopped....

as indicated in above thread, what it does is overpopulate bacterial colony that can help keep your nutrients in check. the bacteria will consume very quickly any nutrients produced by waste produced by fish and food and decaying food etc.

does it work. it does exactly that. but it does other things as well. For instance, one main reason that i've stopped recently is it's effect on my lawnmower blenny. the dosing kept the inside water params so pristine that there weren't enough food for my grazing friend. i noticed after a couple of months of dosing, that my blenny had grown weak and thin and had shortage of food. in the mean time my tank water was as clean as i've ever seen. there are other side effects that are obvious to me.
for instance, a bacterial bloom will no doubt consume disolved oxygen from the water column. my system is very rich in oxygen so it didn't have any negative impact but the bacterial bloom could potentially reduce oxygen level that can affect your fish. i am sure there are other side effects of an articicially creating a huge bacterial colony but these two are what i've noticed....

From those who have dosed Vodka, how did it affect your corraline algae? Please PM your responses so that this thread doesn't get sidetracked. Thanks.

i just started dosing vodka today. im keeping a journal of my results. ill post more if i see a difference

It takes time but it's been great for me.
1) How big is your tank?
2) How much are you dosing?
3) What skimmer do you have?

Currently I have a 55g, Im using the pro clear skimmer, but upgrading to the asm mini-g soon, Im currently dosing 0.2 ml per 25g of water volume. I am finding that the skimmer is producing a little bit more skim mate but would like it to produce more.

I have worked my way up to 4.5mls per day, or .45ml per 25gals. You have to do it slowly. The skimmer is key, you have to remove all those extra bacteria you are growing!

I started a few weeks ago 1 ml( 80 proof) per 20gl and my tank seems to be free of algae now

The other half of this system depends on a skimmer, its the most important part of it you should not even be dosing carbon if you dont have a really good skimmer. Since you no longer have the nuisance algae to help gets the excess nutrients out its up to the skimmer to grab everything after the bac is done with it.
