Dream Tank - 4000 Gallons

I have to agree with everyone. A plain FOWLR system would have been much nicer. I mean with that much live rock you can end up with some interesting hitchhikers if nothing else.

THAT is some stand! OMG.

I don't mind the fake coral, my opinion. Then again, I have fake coral in my fish only tank ... and I like Lambos too. Who is this guy - I'd love to see the tank in person ... wow.

the live rock is your main filtration, along with a nice protien skimmer. hes going to have nitrate problems if not more problems due to the un cycled tank. its also going to be so ugly once algae takes hold on that plastic.

And let us not forget the cautionary tale of "Mr. 4000!" Anybody doing something like this needs to have some engineering consult to deal with 15GPD of evaporation getting into the sheetrock!

That much cash, and the guy puts plastic corals in it, just not right on so many levels!

+1. Its a gawdy shame. Should have gone all out and had the 3 foot plastic castle and neon rainbow substrate. There are so many things wrong with this.

Wow, the naysayers are plentiful!

As far as I can tell the owner hasn’t lifter a finger on this build, short of selling somewhere in the area of 300 – 400 thousand dollars worth of car. This build is being done by a professional company. The person responding to Monster is one of the builders. I believe they had put water into this big tub in the beginning of January…so it has cycled. As far as filtration, you can see some of the plumbing on pages 23, 29 and 31. I’m sure the professional company, seeing the money that this guy could drop, put more than what was needed into this system.

I'm gonna be another one of those "nay-sayers". Money talks. True. And I'm sure the "owner" won't even be maintaining this monster tank. I'm sure to him the setup and the fish are only "decoration" - nothing more. To me that's sad, because I actually care for my animals - fish and corals included. It's fine if you only want to run a FO tank with fake coral, but who in their right mind would add the kind of fish he has? Someone irresponsible and uneducated.

So this is not really a "Dream Tank" afterall. It may look nice and all - for now. Give it some time. Algae will be covering those fake corals in no time, unless they're taken out and cleaned regularly. Again - I don't believe the owner will be involved in the maintenance.

I even wonder if the owner will take the time to observe the behavior of his animals to make sure they're all well and thriving.

Sorry for the long-winded post. But people like that just make me cringe to no extent. Am I jealous? Hell no! If I were to win the lottery I wouldn't put a tank up like THAT, but do it right instead - with the appropriate livestock, REAL corals included. ;D

Just think of the poor sap who eventually is going to have to take that monster down! I've been a number of large tank tear downs, in the 400 to 500g range, and they were A LOT of work. I can't imagine the amount of work and mess that thing is going to leave behind.

heck i'd go in with a net and get all the live stuff out, drain that baby to the outside. Refill with bleach and water, drain again and then just take the front panel down and make it a play room for the kids. Don't have to worry about them spilling something :p

Interesting filtration scheme:

Two 10000 GPH pumps return into tank, one goes thru UV and into left corner return and other goes thru ULTIMA and into the right corner return. The third pump is 8000 GPH amd is only for the skimmer system it returns into the sump. Bio-tower and chiller have has seperate 4000 GPH pumps both return into sump as well.

That makes it - 5x turnover? Only Half the flow is going thru the skimmer, and the other half into the UV. Wouldn't it have made sense to run all 20,000 GPH thru both inline? Overall turnover of 5x seems low to me, but I'm not up to date on how FO tanks are run.

The thread is interesting but reading it makes me wonder why everyone is so amazed by it. Quotes like this just make me laugh: "and there again to those who dished fake corals
EAT CROW caw caw caw and HUMBLE PIE FOR DESSERT
i bet that when the tank is set up it will be nigh impossible to tell if they real
that looks so fantastic "

I think one person said it well - which is the fake corals are a turn-off, but different strokes for different people. What counts is that he likes it and that's all.

one question -why does the builder insist that 200 micron socks are required for saltwater. Is this true? I never knew that.

PFFFTTTT.. myself and Joe where/are using 5micron socks. LMAO! I consistently use 25 micron at the moment.

I know that my skimmer doesn't skim 3/4 of the water that passes thru my sump so really theirs no difference there

the design has got holes in a rack in the sump for what looked like 9 or 12 filter socks. I hope his washing machine isn't occupied with laundry...lol.

Anyways - when the builder makes a statement that 200 micron is required for saltwater - it makes me cringe to think whether or not the person knows what they are doing.

I also have trouble believing the post that when the leopard and other species shark grow too big for the tank, that the owner has an "arrangement" with a local zoo/aquarium to take them. I dunno -if I were the curator of an aquarium - i doubt i'd want to take a hobbyist fish into my set up. But maybe I'm wrong here also.

I think it's fantastic that they are documenting a 4,000 gallon tank that houses 40 tangs plus other fish. But as one person on that thread stated - it's monster fish keepers - not monster coral keepers. I think most folks on this board are monster coral keepers. ;D

why not leave the glass up? drop them in from the top and it will be an observation room. ;)

You and I would be happy if Will were to take a fish off our hands...we also drive family trucksters.
This guy probably is buddies with the local zoo/aquarium because he is the chairman of their board or largest donor something like that.

- I think they pick the 200 micron, so they would not have to clean the filter socks EVERYDAY!! ;D They mind as well use some xtra large fish nets to keep the fish being suck to the pump... ::)

- if this project fail, i think they should dig a big whole on the 2nd floor (on top of the garage), and make it as the entrance for the 4000g swimming pool... ;)
