DTV - Tivo or DVR?

I can only comment on DVR. I have it and love it.
The pro's I know of are:
  • Ease of use. Since it's integrated right into the box from service provider there's no extra equipment or added remotes. It all works together seemlessly.
  • There's no "big brother" saying "Oh you watched a documentary on horses. You must like spaghetti westerns. Let me fill your hard drive with them".
  • No phone dedicated phone line needed either.
The con's I know of are:
  • If you rent a movie from your provider, the DVR box WILL NOT record it (at least that's how it is with cablevision).
  • I just got back from exchaning my box for the third time. For some reason, after power failures, my HDMI output gets fried and I need to replace the box. When that happens I lose everything I had taped and pre-programmed. Which really stinks because I have some shows set to tape "first run only". There have been times when I didn't know a show's season premiere was happening but my DVR got it for me anyway. Now I have to go back and reprogram them all.

That's all I got, but I'm not nearly as techno savvy as others around here!

Nope, it is $5 more per month, though. They advertise it as $10 per month, but you can return the normal cable box that is costing you $5, so the net is $5.

i've had both... i just like the way tivo runs their software much better than comcast DVR...
once you go tivo you will never go back... never!!! tivo will change your life :D

Hi Deb..I have 2 Direct TV High Definition recorders which use Tivo and I like them a lot. They record everything, are easy to navigate and can be left pretty much alone once programmed to your needs. As for Tivo making suggestions based on your viewing habits, this is a feature that can be turned off.

Just note that DTV is adding a new satellite offering more HDTV content and that to receive this new content we will need to upgrade our boxes (including HD recorders) to the latest models. If we choose not to upgrade, we can still get the current lineup
of programming including HD. I'm presently looking into the details of upgrading.

For the tivo you can purchase separately a wireless connector that will then refresh it's tv listings/schedule via your cable modem (assuming you have one) rather than dragging a phone line to connect to the box.

I'm with John. DVR hasn't been bad at all. I like it.

The only other thing I can say as a con is that you can only record 2 things at once and if you happen to be recording 2 things at the same time you can only watch 1 or the other you can't tape channel 5 and 7 but watch channel 4. Am I making sense. But you can however only tape channel 5 and watch any other channel.

I cannot agree with you more. The only problem is that I have tonnes of stuff in my Tivo just not enough time to watch. (the dreaded Tivo stress).

If you love your Tivo (or DVR), may I suggest getting a slingbox for it? If you are a TV and/or a gadget junkie, slingbox is for you. :)

Oh boy... I see it coming now. If I close my eyes will it go away?!

John does not want one. Does NOT want one. Do subliminal messages really work?

We've already upgraded and beat the rush. We had to get a new dish installed.

We really don't have much that we watch religiously. As long as I can record lost in February I'm happy.

Now wouldn't that look stupid in our living room? Good thing you don't like it.
