Epoxy putty and skimmer craziness

I know this has been discussed in the past but I couldn't find it on my phone. Anyway, yesterday I used a bit of putty to get some frags in place and since then my skimmer has been going crazy in my nano. I've had this problem in the past but the skimmer always seemed to calm down after a couple of hours. This time it's been almost 24 hrs since. As of now I have pulled the plug on the collection cup and the skimmer is just draining back into the sump. Should i just shut down the skimmer and wait another day or is it ok to keep it going as I have it. Also this morning I did a large water change at least by nano standards of about 7 gal. Anyone have any ideas here. Thanks in advance.

I would turn it off for a day and start it backup. I find it hard to believe you have to do a water change after using a bit of putty.
How much did you use by the way?

That's what I did shut it down. Gonna give it another 24 hrs. Figure I'll change a couple of gal in the morning and a couple more after work tomorrow. Then fire it back up and see we're I'm at.

I had this problem when I used a good amount of epoxy to hold some rocks together.

I removed the skimmate cup and let it drain back into the sump.....24 hours later it was still doing it.

The only thing that helped it subside was water changes and carbon.

The skimmer is trying to remove the chemical byproducts of the putty. WC, carbon or letting the skimmer run till it stops is your best solution. I would not turn it off.

I usually let it run into the waste container until it stops. I agree with Darren I wouldn't shut it down.

+2 keep the skimmer on just dial it down so it doesnt overflow. check every few hours you can turn the skimmer back up. last about a day for me when i use epoxy

+3 ya I went through this last week.... Changed out 5 gallons and replaced the filter sock with fresh carbon... after 24 hours it was completely back to normal

I'm back to normal. I don't run carbon. Everytime I put a little in my corals get very sad. So I just keep it out. I guess this time I just needed a few extra water changes. Thanks everyone for your help.

don't you have a gate valve or something on the skimmer to just turn it back a little bit? Then when the epoxy effect has subsided, you can just turn the valve back to it's original spot (mark it with a pen or label).

I had it turned down all the way but it was still overflowing. All has subsided since then and I'm back to normal.
