Feeding a RBTA

Can you over feed a Anemone? The reason I ask is I fed mine a silverside and it took it no problem. Then I put a bunch of ghost shrimp in the tank. Everytime a shrimp went into the water column the Allardi Clown grabbed it and fed it to the nem. Just don't want any ill affect from this. In total it was a silverside and 5+ ghost shrimp.

Dont feed silver sides. They have bone and hard cartiledge in them. They can stuck in side the nem.

Stick with mysis squid and krill.

It can also rot inside the nem if it get stuck

I feed alternate between squid and krill. I used to feed them Mysis but the are to big now and need too large of an amount. I feed them every few days or so. They seem to be happy and bubbled up nicely.

I just bought a pack of silver sides just for the nem's. LOL. Guess the starfish will eat well.

So krill is a better option? Dont you have to worry about the shell at that point.

I normally give it a squirt of the reefroid cyclops mix I feed the corals once a week. Just thought it would like something meatier.

Sorry. Hikira makes squid and krill that is chopped. You shouldnt feed anemones large peices of anything. Finger nail size at most.

If an anemone is smaller then 6 or seven inches it can inly really eat 4 or 5 mysis.

Anemones are like a complex bag of water. If something gets stuck in one side and is left in water it will spoil.

Silver sides with hardbone and cartiledge can get stuck.

Large anemones around 10 to 12 inches can take down 3 inch fish.

Gigantea mertens haddoni magnifica have the ability to catch and eat fish.

Bta lta crispa not so much.

Barry is the resident Anem expert, so I would def. listen to him! IMHO, he knows anems better than anyone else on the board.

When we had our bubble tip anems, we target fed them mysids about 1 time per week. The clowns would feed them as well. Our bubble tip got to about 15" x 10" before we gave it away, it took up almost the entire 45g cube.

I do not feed my RBTA at least not intentionally. It collects what it can from the water column like it would on a reef. I've seen it collect pellets as well as all forms of frozen that I feed the fish. If you target feed you are likley to cuase a split .... or ten splits. In my experiene with them overfeeding or stress will cuase a split. If thats what you want , and you can manage the splits, feed away! RBTAs like light so I installed a Kessil 150A to hold my nem in one spot. After I added it it went on a walk about and then went right back to the spot I'd fixed the Kessil on. And there it sits happy as a clam and growing away with no target feeding. Now, if I can just get my O. Clowns to acknowledge the RBTA's existance I'd be happy!
