first post here...looking for some true reefing friends and some help

Hello All,

I have had a recent tragedy occur in my reef, and I ran into a NJreefers member on another site I frequently use, and he told me there are quite a few members here in my area who would probably be more than willing to help me out in any way possible, so here it goes...

I have a 29g reef with a BH2000 HOB skimmer (140g) and a CPR AquaFuge refugium. I have had the tank 10+ years and only converted to a reef a little over a year ago. 90% softies as I wanted to start slow, but I have a few LPS in there as well, and a pocillipora frag that has done okay also.

I spent the last 4 months battling a little cyano outbreak and for about the past month I have finally tracked it down, and kicked it for good. I had the same sandbed from when I set the tank up in 04' (YIKES!!) So i replaced my sandbed, and my water quality, fish, and coral growth have been incredible. I see so many pictures of those mind-blowing tanks and mine was definitely well on it's way for sure.

on 6/5 I left for a vacation to Punta Cana, and all my food was baggied up (flake) and my lights/skimmer/etc. were all set up and self-suffient. I came back home on 6/13 (I live with my dad, his gf, and her daughter, and DO NOT get along with his girlfriend at all.) On 6/13 Every fish was dead, all snails, both starfish, shrimp, crabs, and most of my coral looked dead too. there was a PILE of (pellet) food on the bottom of my tank....no one ever fessed up, but I believed it was delibrate. I spent the last two weeks doing changes, siphoning, skimming, etc and AGAIN got my parameters very well in line, and was ready to actually start putting a CUC and building a rough stocklist again.

on 6/27 I left for the dentist and my dad and her daughter were at work, his girlfriend was home alone though. I left, and my lights were already on, and my coral was opened up beautifully for the first time since I got back from my trip and had my pellet food crisis.

I came home 1 hour later, and my tank REEKED of chlorine...CHLORINE! I couldn't understand but I had the most insane amount of SOAPY FOAMING BUBBLES all over my skimmer overflowing out of the collection cup, all over my tank's surface and not breaking just bubbles floating, and I immediately used the only 10g of RODI I had on hand (I buy water from a LFS) and did a huge change, shut my skimmer off, and took a sample down to my pool store to test for chlorine because there was no way there wasn't chemicals inside my tank, it smelled so strong I almost fainted. I have 20ppm of chlorine in my tank, and all my coral is dead now.........

PLEASE, if anyone can help in any way, I would love to meet some genuine reefers with some good advice for me.

Thanks in advance for reading that saga, but I wanted to be detailed as I am a first timer and no one knows me or my current setups :)

First off welcome to the club.

Second that really sucks, unfortunately you are not the first person I have heard of who have had their tank poisoned by someone.

Third: Move out or wait to set the tank up later. If it has happened twice, it will happen a third time.

Fourth: When you are ready to setup again, we will help out.

Wow……WOW!

I agree with Mike and I’d also have a serous talk with you dad and let him know what’s going on. There is obviously some serious family issues going on that need to be addressed before setting up another tank.

And welcome to the club!

Wow, I agree wait till you are living somewhere else. Then you can have a great tank and will find a bunch of people on this site that will help out. Good luck

aww man, that's insane! I can't believe anyone would do that! but I definitely agree, wait till you move out or address the issue with your family.

I am so sorry you have had that happen.Time for a bogus set up with some basic beginner corals and of course a so called " nanny cam" recording it. Present it to your dad and if no results....move out to your own place ( Mike and Paul are right). Once there we are all here to help you set up and enjoy your system. Next meeting you should go to and meet some of the members.

Welcome! I agree with everyone else saying to wait until you are able to move to out. Although, the nanny cam is not a bad idea. I'm sure that you will get lots of help to help rebuild.

Let's hope for the best, on the home front and on the hobby. Lots of good people here.

Welcome to the club!

That really sucks! I would definitely go to amazon and buy a set of the small cameras and hide them and catch who it is. Then confront them and your dad. Then make a decision from there.

But like everyone has said...a lot of people here will help! Many people have helped me and that's what makes this a great group!

Welcome to the club ...and good luck with your crappy situation...think everyone thinks the same thing until you solve the problem don't spend money or subject animals to someones cruelity.

I would definitely get some cameras and confront everyone in the house with the evidence. Good luck.

If anything's alive in the tank i can hold them for you until you're back up and running. RODI offer still stands if you need some.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for ALL the generous offers of support when things straighten out for me, and I am going to provide everyone who has been reading this an update to follow me through the rebuilding process.

I went out yesterday and purchased a new doorknob that locks with a key ( no way to live i know, but a quick fix non the less... but moving out is very near in the future, I am currently looking at the market and me and my girlfriend are looking for a place of our own.)

I also picked up some carbon as I did not have any on hand (making sure I always have a little on hand just in case from now on. I also got my water re-tested and the chlorine was very very minimal after my 2 10g water changes..AND no metals and NO copper present at all, which is a bright spot for me also. I am currently running carbon in my HOB refugium, and water quality and clarity has definitely shown a huge improvement over the last couple of hours. Some of my yellow polyps and zoas actually began to open today, so I don't think EVERYTHING is dead, and my nassarius snails are actually all still alive and kickin' keeping my sand SO nice after I just replaced the whole sand bed in here.

I am heading to my LFS monday to pick up some more RODI, and I will be doing water changes and running carbon for at least a couple of weeks (close to a month) before I think about trying any livestock of any type again. Still no information on how or why this all happened, but I am happy enough with seeing some of my coral pulling through and my newly added snails that I am keeping a level head.

I will post some pics of the progress and keep everyone up to date! Thanks again everyone, and I will definitely be looking for a couple cheap frags from you guys to get things back up and running when it's time! ;)

P.S. a little security being installed by yours truly to the room as well :)

Hmm sandbed redone? Are you.sure.this.didnt cause your crash? Removing and adding new sand to an existing tank.can cause a cycle

I am very, very certain that it wasn't the sandbed replacement. I siphoned small amounts over 6 weeks, and then added new washed live sand back into the tank and it DID produce a small cycle, but no way it produced foaming soapy bubbles and a tank that absolutely REEEEKED of chlorine

Thanks so much for the generousity. I don't have a good work schedule to get up to union but getting 30g would be nice. I am going to go pick up 20g at my LFS monday and do another 2-10g WC's over the course of next week, and continue testing my water for all parameters at my house, as well as testing it for chlorine/copper/silicates/ etc. at my local pool store..I will keep you updated, and next time I am heading up that way maybe we can talk about some options and good coral species I should look into and stuff

Let me know when you are ready, I have too much stuff and will be happy to get someone going with some free frags. Good luck!
