Fish purchase questions: Pistol Shrimp, Blenny, Recommendations

2 questions:

1. At the moment I have a yellow watchman goby, he RARELY comes out from his burrow. It was recommended by a member to add a pistol shrimp and that the goby would most likely pair and come out more often. My only concerns are that the pistol shrimp will kill my 2 cleaner shrimp and also that it will kill my snails. My cousin had one in his tank and he swore the thing would kill all his snails.

2. I was thinking of adding a bi-color or midas blenny. Anyone see any issues with my current stock list? Also any other recommendations as far as other fish or livestock that might add some color/movement in the tank?

Current stock list of the tank is:

- 3 clown fish: 1 bali true percula, 2 ocellaris
- sixline wrasse
- coral beauty
- blue hippo tang
- yellow tang
- bluespot jawfish
- yellow watchman goby
- mandarin

My pistol shrimp hasnt bothered my emerald crab at all. I never heard of them being aggressive towards other shrimp, maybe if they were really hungry?

I have a pistols in two tanks and both of them have cleaner shrimp. I am a bit partial to tiger pistols but they dig CONSTANTLY and are experts at stealing your frags. However, I like them because they are active and I can actually see them. I have also never seen them eat snails before and have never heard of it. Not saying they couldn't if they really wanted to (especially by bullseye).

No idea on the blennies, never had them.

I have a pair of tiger pistols with my pair of yashi gobies. All 4 hang out under a big zoa frag. Also have a peppermint shrimp, emerald crab and at least 20 snails of various species. I also have a bi-color blenny and have no isuues at all. Like mnat stated, the only problem I have with the pistols is that they like to steal frags and move them around. I don't see any problems by adding a pistol to the tank. Hope I helped a little.

My pistol moves frags constantly as well, but I do also see him attacking the hermits. Hell pick one up and smack it between his claws to crack the shell. I havent seen him be successful yet, although there are less hermits in my tank than when I started...

I wonder who that other member is ::)

Don't worry about the pistol killing anything...I've got my cleaner, a blood red, and many snails....never has hurt a thing.

Also, just be sure to check for which pistol is compatible with the yellow watchman....I thing the Tiger Pistol is...which is what I have.

The blennies....I love my Bi-color, but don't expect a Blenny to add movement....most of the time they find holes in the rocks and just wiggle in and out of them. For movement...I'd go with a couple blue chromis.

^ not true. A starry blenny will move around and a Midas Blenny is said to have a huge personality and swim in the open once it gets used to the tank

My starry blenny is a trip. Not saying he does laps but is pretty funny, and sleeps on the cleaner magnet at night so I have to leave it in the same place. :D

Haha that's funny. My bi-color sleeps stuck to the top skimmer on my BC29. I always think he's dead, but when the lights come on, he's out and about as usual.
