from my understanding some of the people that didnt cover it in epoxy or seal it said that it breaks down over time with saltwater,i have no proof of this just what ive read
The foam is either polystyrene, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate or a mixture of these. If it comes in a can, the likelihood are the last two, and most likely just polyurethane. There is a gas that gets entrapped in the closed cells or the foam that will outgas over time, but the release is sooooo slow that I don’t see that as a problem. Some of these foams are actually cured by the presence of moisture, and I would think that after a week, it is done. I haven’t read any articles on use in a tank and the time to cure, but chemically I would think that you are safe at this point. Realize that polyurethane is easily oxidized and exposure to UV (sunlight and whatever UV comes from the lights), will cause the foam to break down over time.
just put dumped in my water and FLOATED LIKE NO TOMORROW. crap! i'll have to take as much out as possible while still looking decent. i have no clue how i'll be doing this.
I've been thinking on going the same route, and will also use the marine epoxy 2 part,to give it protection from UV rays, and make it "rock hard" the marine epoxy from what I hear also comes in many colors too.( not really a big deal, cause in time it will get coraline anyway)I will use the eggcrate for the back, and will silicone the perimeter of the crate to the back glass,to stop it from floating, and to have no voids in between the crate and glass.Im also thinkin on running some pvc pipe(twist tied to the crate) for returns at any depth, and cover them with foam...just some thghts...
