food for psych mandarin goby

i have had this guy for a month and he is wasting away. i have tried live brine cyclopseez mysis formula a
and flake and i have not seen him eat. his belly is completely sucked in. he will die any day if i can't find him some food. he's with two clowns who eat everything very well.i have three fire shrimp too and they recently molted. they don't bother each other at all. got snails for over a year now too. so tank is stable.
tanks chemistry is cool... i have corals growing and i have had these clowns for years. shrimp 6 months. what does he want to eat?

- they like to eat "live" stuffs - like pods...

- if your tank don't have them yet, it probably too late for your tank to be ready, you are better off to give the fish to someone else with a well established tank, or may be if you have a refugium, then put the fish there, there mind be some pods already there for it to survive.

how big is your tank? the bigger and more LR the better.

if your local to Marlboro - you're welcome to try putting him in my refugium. I can also try to put some filter media in my sump to cultivate pods... you can then move it to your system.

I'm a big fan of the Dragonets - i have a nice plump one in my dislpay. i thought i lost him until my wife found him in the sump 2 months later. he hasn't made that trip again

Copepods/ amipods/ and rotifers....
And maybe some baby brine shrimp...
and mysis shrimp....
These are fast mutiplyers...
And you can culture them fairly easily...
I just purchase one culture and throw it in my fuge/ sump and they just breed and breed and breed...
Go to your local LFS and maybe you can purchase some from them, if the are a decent reputable lfs they would have a fuge or tank with tons of them...
Otherwise maybe somebody cultures them on here and can give you some...
If you are close to Green Brook (08812) I can siphon some out of my fuge for you to get you started...

I read they sometimes eat a certain type of roe. It is orange colored and in most oriental grocery stores. I can't remember the exact name.

If you can't get someone to give you pods to start your fuge up, i would buy a few bottles of tiggerpods to get you started. I know AO carries them, but call around to your LFS and see who carries them. IF your tank isn't 75G or bigger it will not support a mandarin. they eat all day long and can decimate a population in no time. I would give it to someone that can properly take care of it

I wish i could have one. I wouldn't even put one in my 215 for at least 6+ months because it is too new and it would starve and die. Pretty soon i will be buying pods from different sources to boost my population so i can have one

i have 2 of the spotted species, i had to seperate them even though one was male and other female, the little female was shreded to hell from the male constantly chasing her, so shes in the fuge now, but they are both plump as can be, after 6 months i put atleast 3000 pods in my fuge, now thier everywhere, breeding in my overflows and all, crazy, but fish in my tank has a constant supply of pods if they want them

The advice on feeding mandarin gobies is correct. Usually they do need a supply of pods generated by the reef system itself.

However, I have been able to sometimes get individual fish to take frozen blood worms and live black worms. You might try those foods. Be careful feeding live black worms since they only live a few minutes in SW.

I think the best advice was to immediately go to an LFS and purchase some pods. At least he will have some food for the time being. Next find someone who can care for it properly until your tank is established and can support it.

black worms - aren't they also known as tubifex worms? if so that's a freshwater invert.

Black worms are similar to tubifex worms, but they are much darker. Also, tubiflex worms usually are collected in some really foul water. This makes black worms preferred.

They can only live a few min in SW because they are native to FW.

Since they are a FW animal, I wouldn't want to feed a steady diet of them to a SW fish, but I have found many SW fish do love to eat them.

I have had a mandarin goby for well over a year,but I have a 90 reef with a sub filled with cheato and lotsa pods,but I do supplement with artic pods by reef nutrition...I hope this helps some,good luck
