For the Southern NJ Reefers

I hope that this discussion is not "out of line" for this forum and if it is taken out of context please accept my apologies.

I find that it can be frustrating when reading the "for sale" forum here. I always get excited when I see great pieces of coral for sale and than I come to find that almost everyone is atleast a hour north of me. So I just wanted to pass on this new website that I found. Most of the fellow reefers are based out of Philly and also sell nice coral at friendly prices as well. Everyone that I have met are very knowledgeable about the hobby and are not trying to rip you off. You can find many acans, zoas and SPS for sale at almost anytime. The guy Mr X has a beautiful tank and will frag almost anything he has a colony of for you. Please take a look at the site it you are interested. The website is RENEGADEREEFERS.org

I'm in South Jersey... exactly where in south jersey were you looking for? Almost everyone is between 30 to 45 minutes of me since it's not as densely populated as the northern areas. Search some threads, we have a very healthy population of reefers down here....

as far as friendly prices, i don't know what to say about that ? what's high?

I'm in Gloucester County... and I'm not saying anything negative regarding NJReefers. I'm just informing other fellow reefers, who may feel the same way I do living down south, about another local community that I found. In respone to the "friendly prices" question I think the prices on this website are also fair and everyone is very helpful if you have a problem. I just was giving some new people that I met a little credit. Thats all...

unfortunately your not the only one. we have a low amount of availability for those of us in the NORTHERN region as well. especially good LFSs. everyone and the meets seem to be an HOUR plus some. you have a good group of individuals in the south about ~45minutes away which i personally wouldn't mind instead of an hour+. honorably mentioned: merv (concept3), pnoyreefer, phyl and john that i've noticed. I'm sure there's others as well.

it's a 2 hour trip from north to south and if their further than an hour your on the better side of that line for this hobby.

i think it's best to be in central jersey. oh well. ROAD TRIP!!!

IMO meetings come once a month so alittle time on the road isnt a big deal. just make as many trades/buys with people prior so its def. worth it. put it this way an hour drive to a meeting is like an hour drive to a good LFS, granted you pre arranged deals with members.

i lied it CAN take ~1hour 15 minutes to get from one end to the other. fast lap time from Virginia Beach, VA > Hackensack,NJ 5hours:15minutes. those were the good old days ;D

if anyone else has driven from bergen county to that area you know it takes +-7 hours on a good day.

btw, good point onefish. but i have two kids. so that one hour is a long one hour.

LOL. I think everything you want is always at the other end of the earth. I'm looking at Merv's corals thinking "Hmm... wonder when I'll get down that way". I look at those fish that Javis is selling or frags Pnoy is selling and think "Oh Man ... too far north!".

The beauty (strength in numbers affords us pooled resources for good GREAT price breaks from vendors (the recent PA group buy at 15% off and free shipping for example), discounts at LFS (10% at most), etc) of encompassing the entire state outweighs the bad of things sometimes being a bit too far away.

I've frequently wondered if it would be helpful to have a regional reef area so that folks could have "local" discussions, but we usually end up deciding against it for one reason or another. Not sure how (other than the city designators in the subjects of the FS posts) we could improve the process for the for sale/trade area.

As for meetings... if you want one close... HOST! :) And FWIW, we travel with our 2 kids to every meeting. There have been lots of us who do that. It turns out to be good family time together and the kids enjoy being with the other kids at the meetings.

I know how it feels.. I drove up to get my 220 from Bax in Bloomingdale and to get a 75 gal from Godiver which i thought was bellmawr not belmar on the ocean.. lol everyone almost is an hour or more away. we have one pet store i'll call if that only has a limited selection of fish but they did say they are moving things around and going to be bigger.

I'm in Salem County BTW but luckily the Delaware reef club is close and some decent stores over there

don't get me wrong. i'd love to do it and i will but my newborn is 2 months old and can't that type of traveling especially in this cold. ask liger or alstair. far drive with my kids in the car and my wife not happy about it. ha!

lucky sometimes she understands!

I would love to host but in a 800sq foot apartment with a newly established 55gallon. NOT MUCH SHOW. with absolutely nothing to instruct or give advice on. I don't think that would become a really good meet.

End of the year with a new condo and upgrade to an in-wall 120gal (personal dreams). I will definitely be interested in hosting in the future!

Awwwwww. They're so cute when they're that size. And then in a blink of an eye... poof. They're 9 years old. Crazy.

Good luck with your end of year goals! :)

Im from SJ, Gloucester County as well, haha i was just talking to Phyl about a little sub forum, I'd go to that other forum but I'm already on to many forums and like the people here. I drive far for Club RSX meets so why not NJReefers meets. Maybe in time I'll host a meet down here if my parents allow it, plus then all you guys can convince my parents into getting a larger tank haha.

Bring them to some meetings... then they'll have tank envy!

Yeah I thought it was ironic that this would come up just after you approached me about it!

Don't worry Dan your parents will have tank envy tonight when they see our set up. We are still having the May meeting. Our house isn't that big but a barbecue planned, plenty room outside. We always have a few different things for sale here anyone is welcome to come see what we have. We are located at exit 10 on 295.
