Found crack in tank during setup

 :-[

Setting up my tank today. Everything was going great. Got the tank and stand into the truck, backed up to the front door. Worked my way of getting it onto a 2' runner carpet then dragged the carpet over to where the tank goes and got it into place.

So why so sad? Cause right before I took it out of the bed of the truck I noticed a crack in the corner. I don't know how severe this is. Do I take a chance that it will be ok or assume that it's $ down the drain and buy a new one. No one around here has 120s in stock and I missed the last used one. I didn't see this when I bought it (although it was dark, grrr). I can't blame the seller though as it's my responsibility.

Since it's on the corner, I wonder if it would be ok. Also, I don't think it's very level. Looks like it could be off as much as 1/2" end to end. How big of a deal is that? It sits on carpet, so it's not like it can be shimmed.

??? ??? ???

I'm not so sure I agree with this. If you're positive that you didn't damage it during transit, I would go back to the seller. I think they have some responsibility to let you know of any damage.

It's kind of hard to see from the pic whether or not you'd have any trouble with it. You can try filling it with water and letting sit for a few days. Also, you really want to try level the tank the best you can, especially if the low side is the side with the crack.

Regardless, sorry to hear about the problems. I know how depressing it is.

I would take it back thats a pretty serious crack. And I agree with John the seller should have said something but he/she may blame it on you and say it was never there.

Thanks, but to be candid, I'm of the view that it's my responsibility to know what I'm purchasing. This was from another forum member and I have no one to blame but myself. If I buy a used car, I expect the seller to tell me what they know is wrong, but if there is something they don't know about, like a worn heater hose under the car that they don't normally see, then it's just one of those things.

Now though, I'll have to get a new tank, so I may as well get the new stand and canopy that I can't afford but really wanted. Cause I don't want to have to replace that some day.

it could be reinforced to be filled half way and used in a sump application... and for the price of a store bought stand, you could build a custom one to accomodate that

I too would fill it with water and see if it leaks.I have close to the same type of damage on my 90 reef, and its held now for almost 6 yrs...lol Good luck

I had the same type of crack on a 40 breeder and tossed it . Its not worth the risk. It may hold forever but all it has to do is not hold once !

Francis (sinkingbeach) had a 170 or something like that with huge chunks taken out of the corners. The thing looked terrible and still worked for him for years. I think Renee actually has that tank set up now.

Ya never know, it may hold, it may not but it's worth filling just to check it out.

Man have a small piece of glass cut that will cover that area slap some silicone on it like a patch on an old pair of jeans, and fill that sucker. Thats up near the top there is no pressure there. I would just watch to see if any big cracks form at first.
