Frag tank

Hi all I want to start a frag under 40 gallons w/out breaking the bank.I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what shape would be best I was thinking a cube? Also would i need to run a sump and or refugim w/ it.Any suggestions would be great

The person I normally get frags off of has a 20 long and has a HOB filter with rubble LR. He said he is just faithful with the weekly water changes. Works for him.

+1 what ThatGuy said. The only comment I can make, that probably goes without saying, is that flow flow flow..

I had almost no algae in the 15g tank with some rubble LR + HOB for about 1.5 years. Then my small powerhead died and caused a mess in the tank. I neglected to replace it and let it go for 6 months and now it's a total mess. Nothing else really changed except that some clean-up crews also disappeared/died along with some frogspawn.

I also changed over from a small PC lights to a cheap-o high powered 9 LED (Costco purchased) down pointing light.

Hey Meg, I have a 15g that I've been using for a frag tank. Like it was said, you don't need anything exravagant, just keep on top of it.

Instead of tank shoppping I'm sure if you posted in the Want to Buy section someone would have something pretty cheap. A 20 long tank is a good starter frag tank. Long and low. As far as sumps and fuges go I would say a HOB would be just fine. Mine only has a Whisper HOB with a surface skimmer and a Koralia 700gph powerhead.

Any ideas on lighting for it?

I have a quad t5 20 inch that I would use also have a penguin biowheel. My soft corals are out of control and my 55 is packed lol

In my experience it is harder to get good flow in a cube . A lower long tank, breeder style, would probably be easier .

just go with a shallow bare bottom tank. you could tie it in with your dt. that would prob be best

Hey Meg,

I may be that guy he was talking about! lol I had the 20 Long which was a nice footprint. Used live sand, a good HOB filter with rubble rock in it as well as the cartridge, and had 2 small powerheads to keep the water flowing. I sell alot often, so I was constantly taking water out of it to bag stuff up, but if you're diligent with your waterchanges, it shouldn't be an issue. I usually take a piece about 1/4 of the pad, cut it off the old one, and reuse it against the new pad. Never really had any issues with parameters after it was fully cycled. All my frags lived fine, even full size pieces of lobo, plates, etc. I just wouldn't recomment the Acro in that situation. Good luck! Hope to be trading with you soon! Shawn

I have my frag tank up and am so excited. I think if one more tank is in my house the people from hoarders will be knocking on my door for an intervention
