Fragging a leather in the tank?

Is it safe to frag a leather in the tank? I have a leather coral that needs to be trimmed but is attached to a very large rock. If so, what is the easiest way, scissors, razor blade, etc.

I have fragged leathers before in the tank and it will bother other corals at least for a day. I would tell you to do it out of the tank and get rid of the water you cut it in. It depends on what shape ur cutting but a clean blade or scissors would do the trick leave a good amount at least 1-2 inch from the base where it attaches to the rock. Same thing for the stem and the head leave some space around the stem.

+1….out of the tank if you can. What I did was minimize the cutting in the tank by cutting off all that I wanted to cut off in one big piece, and then cut up that big piece out of the tank, and now put the pieces in a bucket by itself. Leathers do put out “nasty’s” when cut. Oh, and I used scissors.

I used to frag my finger leather, which got huge, right in the tank. I would reach into the tank with a clean pair of scissors and snip. I would throw in some fresh carbon just in case, but never had any issues. It's probably best to do out of the tank, but sometimes that's not an option. I found my leather didn't care where I cut it, I even peeled pieces of it right off the rock. They're a very hardy coral.

Yea, I've done the same as Craig (falconut) and just sliced a chunk down (vertically), then peeled the leather right off the rock. It took a little bit of coaxing with the scalpel to help peel it off the rock, but it was pretty simple. Just take your time and try to damage as little as possible and you should be fine.
