glass bottles

i know a few people here use the glass beer bottles in there reefs and i was just thinkin i just used up that last of some A-1 steak sauce and if i can use that bottle just to try and be alittle different with the shape.

what is the attraction to beer bottles? is it to provide a more realistic environement or something else. i'm not a hundred percent sold on the beer bottles in the reef concept. is there any real benefit to doing this?

PaulB preps his by sanding and then adding grout/cement to parts of the outside to "age" them and give Coraline to grow on . Read up on his technique because his look as good as it gets . He also has wrote that its a safe and good place for pods to grow in the main tank and when they decide to discover the world they make great fishfood . And besides the food benefit I think they look good .

hmmm, interesting...
- putting pods in on day one is quite easy
- is there any trick on in case it need to "refill" more pods 6 months down the road? or no need to do so at all ?

While I commend you all for recycling, I honestly just don't get it. I mean I understand the concept but why not use a seashell if you don't already have a graveyard of turbos? I guess if you like the look fine, and Paul's tank has a certain charm because his is different.

I guess what I am saying is it is just not for me.

i have to agree with the person above... if a safe breeding grounds for pods are only possible in glass bottles then it's going in my sump not my display.

it's an interesting look but can't say i am completely sold on the look.

I think I might of been misunderstood with the pod thingy . Pods will grow without a bottle,any hiding space seems good for them .The bottle to me looks good and the pods are a side benifit . Putting it in the sump defeats the benifit,in the tank the pods dont have to get pumped into the tank,from the sump they do . And I dont think pods need help staying alive and breeding in a sump,its in the tank with fish that they have issues.
I just think the look in PaulB's tank adds a little interest,something else to check out while looking at the tank.

I did understand...I am just not into putting flotsam in my tank....personally.

I agree with you in Paul's tank it it quite interesting...I have read his entire thread on MR and some others that he wrote before he came sometimes to NJRC. I completely respect what he has managed to accomplish.

As you said a bottle in a fuge is sort of unnecessary, the idea of a fuge is to have a place without predators so you don't really need the bottle. Of course half the people in the reefkeeping have some #&*^$^ damselfish in there in which case keep the bottle. ;D

haha. damn the damsels. actually, i have some of my weakest fish couple of gobies that have had out-of-body experiences due to the damn damsel.--- in the fuge.... lol
