Good beginner corals

So I'm finally going to start dipping my hands into corals & I'm looking for some recommendations on some nice beginner corals.

Tank: 55g/20g sump
Lights: t5's
Fish: ocellaris clowns (2)

Any insight as to which grow like that? I'm pretty sure xenias are like that although I am not certain. I'll probably lean to zoas they're the most appealing to me

Stay away from the xenia it's a real PIA... I would say try some Zoas or even hammer or frogspawn..

Definitely the hammer and frogspawn, those were my first ones also and they are still with me. There are also several SPS that are easy. What T5 fixture are you running?

Some palys, GSP, Kenya Trees are real quick spreaders too. Xenia hasn't been an issue for me, I just keep it high up and scrape it off the glass when it walks. Leathers are an easy coral, too. Pretty much most softies that are photosynthetic are considered easier corals.

Your best bet is probably zoa's/palys. They're colorful, not very expensive (depending on the kinds you pick), and pretty easy to care for. Xenia is something I recommend people staying away from as once it takes off there is no stopping it. I feel the same way about Kenya tree's.

Just my .02 cents. Other may very well like xenia and kenya trees.

^^^ good reading there

I'm still a beginner and after a year of reef keeping I'm still learning the in's n out's. I only have zoas, shrooms & gsp and I'm having fun watching everything grow.

im also a beginer (just over a year) i love hammer, torches, and frog spawn

green star polyps add a bright green and spread like weeds just keep them away from you rock scape on its own rock.

xenia-put its own frag some where and moniter it

zoa are very colorful (took me a year to get them to start to take off)

cloves-grow good they were my first corals that took off

duncans-are cool and also grow good in my take form day 1

mushrooms are cool at first but grow very fast and i have removed all mushrooms from my tanks

i just tried brain corals and birds nest both seem do be doing good my birds nest as doubled in size in a month and the brain has some of the brightest pretties colors i have ever seen

zoanut corals in medford,nj has very resonable prices on corals from $5 frags up t0 $100 show piece definately worth a drive to go see him and buy a bunch of starters for like 40 (8 zoas) and test them out throw trial and error

other stores frags start at like 20 and if that dies you will definetaly be pissed

Hammers/torches/frogspawns all pack a powerful punch and can stretch a good distance so make sure to give them space... As they will take out other corals easily..
